Description

Center for Civic Design is a small but mighty team working to make a difference in American elections. And we are growing, from a team of 4 in 2020 to a diverse team of 16 designers, researchers, writers, and supporting staff in 2024.

We’re looking for someone to join the team as Deputy Director, helping us manage a growing team and thrive as we grow into the future.  You’ll need experience working in nonprofit or government, managing small organizations and their people, communicating mission and impact, cultivating and managing grants, and working with design and UX research teams. Above all, you’ll bring a passion for making voting easier.

Sound like fun?  The right person for this role:

  • Thrives in a creative environment and building a supportive, stable, well-structured organization focused on new ideas.
  • Loves to find ways to explain the mission, vision, and impact of design and CCD’s work on our democracy
  • Can identify ways for design to make a difference in policy as the basis for new programs and new funding.
  • Gets the complexity of collaboration and cares deeply about meeting the needs of diverse voters with a portfolio to show your experience in working with communities, advocacy organizations, and state and local governments.
  • Is a great communicator, in person and in writing, whether they are talking to a team member, a foundation, a non-profit, or an elections office.

Responsibilities

As the Deputy Director, you work closely with the Executive Director and Board as the second in command of the organization. We are looking for someone ready to take on the challenge of running an organization and ultimately taking over leadership. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Development. Cultivating relationships, writing grants and managing grants and renewals.
  • Communications. Overseeing and supporting strategy for the communications team, which manages the website, writes our regular newsletters, and publishes our public information.
  • Advisory Committee. Leading the advisors through regular communication, annual meetings, and nominating new members.
  • Finance. Assisting in managing the business and financial life of CCD.

These responsibilities will be shared, as you transition into the role.

Qualifications

You have

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field or comparable experience
  • 5+ years experience leading similar organizations or large programs within an organization, including people management experience
  • Have worked in an organization focused on design and research, ideally leading a project or team with design or UX as an important component
  • Experience writing and managing grants or other proposals
  • Experience managing budgets and taking financial responsibility for an organization or program
  • Experience in elections or election policy is a bonus
  • You must be located in the continental United States, comfortable with remote work
  • You must be eligible to vote in US elections

At Center for Civic Design, we are:

  • Committed to diversity. We want to encourage everyone—regardless of race, gender, orientation, ethnicity, disability, or belief—who feels they could do a great job to apply.
  • Committed to supporting language access in elections and including people who speak Spanish or another language on our team.
  • A distributed team and have been from the start of the Center for Civic Design. You’ll collaborate with remote teammates who will help you apply your civic design and research skills to modernizing elections.
