EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Full-Time | Start Date: July - August 2024

The Bay Area Freedom Collective is a transitional housing program and supportive reentry network for those returning home from prison after long sentences. We believe in mutual care, transparency, empowerment & agency, solidarity not charity, and standing up for justice. Our mission is to ensure that community members returning from prison are connected to the resources and support they need to be safe, healthy, and empowered to rebuild their lives. 


ABOUT THE ROLE

The Executive Director will be Bay Area Freedom Collective’s second hire and will supervise a temporary, part-time Program Director. The Executive Director will act as Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer and will be responsible for Bay Area Freedom Collective’s overall operations.

The Executive Director will take an entrepreneurial approach to setting strategies and organizing operations to maximize organizational impact while leveraging the fundraising potential of the organization. The ED will define and communicate organizational and program strategy based on the stated mission of the organization and the strategic goals set by the Board of Directors. 

As the Executive Director is getting set up, they will be supported by the Founding Team as needed.


RESPONSIBILITIES

Fundraising: Sets fundraising strategy for the organization, and, along with the Board President, serves as its primary fundraiser to meet fundraising goals. Fundraising goals will include raising $85,000 in year one and $275,000 in year two. 

Staff Management: Hires, supervises, and if necessary terminates employees. Makes final choice of all full-time hires and oversees their supervision and evaluation. Works with staff and board to determine additional staffing needs and grow the organization as necessary and appropriate. 

Volunteer Management: As a community-based organization, Bay Area Freedom Collective relies heavily on volunteer support to achieve its organizational goals. In conjunction with the Program Director, the Executive Director will build and maintain a robust and engaged volunteer base, set their priorities, and coordinate their activities.

Organizational Development: Develops policies, protocols, and systems as needed to create a healthy and well-functioning organization.

Marketing and Outreach: Works with volunteers, the Board, and other stakeholders to develop and implement marketing and outreach strategies, including developing the website and social media, creating partnerships with relevant organizations, producing collateral materials, conducting outreach to the press, producing events, and speaking widely about the work of the organization.

Program Management: Develops high-level programmatic vision in partnership with the Board. Oversees all elements of Bay Area Freedom Collective programming.

  1. Housing - This includes working with the Board’s Housing Committee to interview and accept residents into the house, to conduct gate pick-ups, supporting house residents in ensuring their essential needs are met, troubleshooting material and programmatic issues in the home, and coordinating with the Founding Team, House Manager, and volunteers to support housing operations.
  2. Essential Services - Develop the essential services program and continue coordinating with volunteers to support critical and immediate post-release needs of our community.
  3. Job Support - Develop Bay Area Freedom Collective’s job search program to include resume & cover letter writing, interview prep, and career coaching.

Board: Actively facilitates the growth and development of the Board of Directors. Reports regularly to the board on program, finance, and administration. Advises the board of any issues with significant legal or financial implications for the organization or its staff or volunteer leaders. Works with the Founding Team to set agendas for board meetings and prepares materials for board meetings. 

Finance and Administration: Serves as the chief financial officer of the organization. Responsible for creating and managing annual budget and the development and oversight of appropriate financial systems, controls, and records.

 

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

Compensation and benefits: This is a full-time, benefited, and exempt position that includes healthcare, holidays, and paid time off. The salary range for this position is $110,000 to $130,000 per year. 

Schedule: General work hours are from Monday - Friday, 9am to 5pm, but will sometimes include work beyond 40 hours per week.

Supervision: This position is supervised by the Board of Directors.

You are passionate about Bay Area Freedom Collective’s mission and values and have the background and experience to lead our work. You are excited about being the boots on the ground and problem solving everything from house maintenance needs to community building initiatives. 

You are an experienced leader with the ability to see the big picture and manage details of a new nonprofit organization. You have demonstrated success managing individuals and teams, and facilitating interpersonal relationships and collaborations.

We are open to applicants with varying levels and types of experience, provided that the applicant displays the skills required to successfully execute the job described above. You might be a good fit if you possess/demonstrate the following:


EXPERIENCES THAT COULD LEAD TO YOUR SUCCESS

  • You have held a leadership role in a small nonprofit or for-profit (i.e.: an annual operating budget of $500,000 to $2M)
  • You have grant writing experience
  • You have personal experience with the criminal legal system or supporting others that have, either in prison or during reentry
  • You have experience working with the immigration system and LGBTQ and low income communities.
