About Acacia Center for Justice:

The Acacia Center for Justice (“Acacia”) provides legal support and representation to immigrants facing deportation through the development, coordination, and management of national networks of legal services providers serving immigrants across the country. Acacia’s goals are twofold: to support immigrant legal services and defense networks to provide exceptional legal services to immigrants; and to advocate for the expansion of these programs and the infrastructure critical to guaranteeing immigrants access to justice, fairness, and freedom. Acacia ensures accountable, independent, zealous, and person-centered legal services and representation to protect the rights of all immigrants.


Job Summary:

The Managing Director, Budget, Planning & Analysis leads the annual budget process for the program teams and HQ departments, and the development and assessment of long-term financial projects, scenario analysis, cost assessments, and benchmarking. This position participates in the development of the overall strategic vision and budget of Acacia as a senior leader within the organization. The Managing Director reports to the CFO and directly manages 3 planned positions, the Director of Business Operations, Adults & Families Programs, the Associate Director of Business Operations, Children’s Programs, and the Budget Manager. The Managing Director indirectly oversees a team of 10, as the Director of Business Operations, Adults & Families Programs oversees a team of 5 across the Adults & Families programs portfolio – 1 Finance Manager, 1 Senior Finance Associate, 1 Finance Associate, and 2 Analysts – and the Associate Director of Children’s Programs oversees a team of 5 across the Children’s programs portfolio – 1 Finance Manager, 2 Senior Finance Associates, and 2 Finance Associates.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

Budgeting & Analysis

  • Lead the operating budget and forecast process for Acacia, including the preparation and communication of the guidance and requirements, and ensure timely and quality operational budget submissions that reflect the true financial position of each office.
  • Partner and collaborate with program and operational stakeholders in budget development and analysis.
  • Coordinate the preparation of the Acacia operating budget as well as the consolidation, review, and analysis of all budgets for approval by executive leadership.
  • Manage routine financial reviews for all areas of budget responsibility and consistent with Acacia’s financial governance.
  • Build the Budget Manager position to ensure sustainable oversight over Acacia’s budget portfolios.
  • Conduct training for budget holders on Acacia’s operating budget policies and processes, in partnership with the CFO.

Finance Partnering & Award Management Support

  • Coordinate routine financial performance reviews and action planning in areas of award management, financial analysis, and forecasting to effectively utilize restricted and unrestricted funds to meet departmental needs.
  • Manage the Budget and Resource Management (BRM) units: directly managing a team of two directors of business operations, indirectly managing a team of ten – two finance managers, three senior finance associates, three finance associates, and two analysts, on financial management and oversight of multi-year federal and state-funded programs.
  • Provide financial tools and technical advice to BRM for effective management of government and program funding, including the development of price benchmarking and cost assessments.
  • Partner with departmental and unit budget leads, working closely with Fiscal Services to ensure Acacia’s financial position is properly documented in the finance system.

Team Leadership & Management

  • Effectively manage and motivate their team with regular one-on-one meetings, ongoing feedback and communication, and regular career planning and professional development.
  • Provides leadership related to budget and financial management services to support Acacia’s mission and vision.
  • Exercises strategic decision-making, with a big picture lens towards the landscape, including inter-relationship between programs, Acacia’s network of legal service providers, and Acacia’s operating budget.

Required Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:

  • Proven knowledge in complex financial analysis and expertise working on budgets, with the ability to create insight from data and analyses.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and diplomatic skills.
  • Solid organizational skills, with the ability to be flexible and the ability to apply creative problem-solving skills.

 Preferred Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:

  • Lived or affiliated experience with the immigration and/or criminal justice systems is a strong plus.

Education and Experience:

  • Advanced degree in business administration, public administration, or finance. In lieu of degree requirement, applicable work or life experience may be considered.
  • 12+ years of relevant experience, with a minimum of 5 years of progressive budgeting and finance experience.

 Compensation and Benefits:


Acacia has established an internal compensation philosophy that centers equity and pay transparency. The salary for this position is set at $165,000. The salary listed is just one component of Acacia’s total compensation package for employees. Supporting Acacia staff—both personally and professionally—is our priority.
