Job Summary

Under general direction and supervision of the Director and Senior Animal Control Officer performs routine and technical services related to the health, welfare, care and wellbeing of shelter animals.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Performs general office duties including inputting computer records, and maintaining all required documents, reports, forms, etc.
  2. Directs complaints from the public to the appropriate personnel or agency.
  3. Issues pet licenses. Gives basic animal behavior and pet relinquishment advice.
  4. Inspects domestic animals regularly and reports sickness, injuries, or any other changes in their condition.
  5. Assists veterinarian by administering medications as directed, assisting with euthanasia, and lifting of deceased animals into the freezer.
  6. Lifts and transports domestic animals to and from animal hospitals, spay and neuter clinic, barn homes, and foster homes.
  7. Evaluates prospective adopters; assists in the adoption process.
  8. Provides information to the public regarding receiving and releasing animals, adoption, and lost and found animals; in accordance with standard operating procedures facilitates the return of domestic animals to their owners.
  9. Feeds domestic animals and cleans their cages, kennels/cat condos and surrounding work areas within the shelter in accordance with proper disease control.
  10. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must be able to handle and control domestic animals.
  • Must be physically fit with the ability to lift weight up to forty (40) pounds.
  • Must possess basic computer literacy.
  • Must be able to maintain accurate written records; to understand and carry out complex written and oral instructions.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and courteously.
  • Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
  • Training Requirements

Upon Appointment:

  • Successful completion of Basic Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Adobe courses within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Must gain a working knowledge of departmental procedures and practices including occupational hazards and standard safety practices, and disease control procedures, through on-the-job training and usage within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Must gain a working knowledge of departmental technology and database systems through on-the-job usage and training within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Must gain a mastery of animal control equipment and tools through on-the-job training and usage within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Customer Service Training
  • Sexual Harassment, Sensitivity, and Diversity Training

Sustainment: 

  • Participation in customer service training every 24 months
  • Periodic training in workplace safety and other professional development to ensure safe, high performance and value-driven operations.
  • The term “limited” means that the successful candidate will perform the job for an undetermined length of time. The position may or may not become permanent.
