Description

Position Summary:

The Women’s Equality Center provides strategic communications and campaign support to the reproductive health, rights, and justice field at all levels, developing long-term, big-picture messaging frameworks around emerging issues and complementing and strengthening the work of organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean via grants, integrated policy and communications campaigns, and rapid-response operations.

We’re an unusual organization, and this is an unusual role. WEC is a highly collaborative environment in which we keep structure and reporting lines intentionally loose and the boundaries between roles flexible to ensure that we’re bringing the full range of expertise, experience, and perspective of every team member to the strategies we’re developing and work we’re doing. Everyone does a little bit of everything here. We’ve worked very hard to establish an organizational culture based on collaboration, candor, transparency, and a great deal of mutual respect and trust. We take it very seriously, and we will need you to as well.

Reporting to the Director of Strategy & Communications, the Communications Manager will manage the organization's key contacts and relationships with media consultants and individual journalists throughout the Americas. This is a great opportunity for someone who is proactive, creative and has a deep understanding of how to use press to shape narratives and help sway public opinion. The Communications Manager will need to be bilingual, and fluently speak, write, and read in Spanish and English.

Essential Responsibilities and Activities:

  • Contribute to overall communications strategies and tactics - with a focus on shaping strong narratives and pitching stories to reporters and journalists that further WEC’s mission and work.
  • Ensure timely updates to press clip trackers, contributing to the maintenance of up-to-date records of media coverage.
  • Design and develop press strategies and materials, including press kits and events.
  • Serve as one of WEC's contacts for the press in the United States and Latin America.
  • Coordinate press interviews for WEC principals and partners as needed.
  • Work with partners on the ground to develop media strategy and materials specifically tailored to them; support partner organizations to improve their press and media reach.
  • Draft press releases, talking points, memos, op-eds, and other materials as needed in both English and Spanish.
  • Support special projects, such as media grants, foreign delegations, and other projects as assigned.
  • Other duties as required.

The successful candidate must have the following skills and qualities:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in communications work aimed at pushing policy, political, or cultural progress.
  • Complete fluency in both Spanish and English. Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills, with a knack for creative and engaging copywriting and an eagle eye for editing.
  • Have a keen understanding of how to reach different audiences, especially when using persuasive messaging, and be efficient in finding different angles to capture press interest.
  • Strong virtual communication and collaboration: efficiency and comfort with Slack and Google Suite, responsiveness via email, and willingness to participate in weekly group calls or as needed.
  • Comfortable multitasking and managing many projects simultaneously, and under tight deadlines.
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative environment, and open to criticism and compromise. High attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with and respect people of different cultures and viewpoints.
  • Passion for making a difference; a growth mindset, can-do attitude, versatility, and openness to engaging in a spectrum of work.
  • Ability to travel both domestically and internationally, up to 25% of the time, some of which may occur over weekends or holidays.
