Description

The Position 


The National Women’s Law Center seeks a talented writer and communicator who will craft, edit, and copyedit a range of multi-channel content for both internal and external use to join our collaborative, creative, and supportive Communications team.


This is a full-time, exempt position of 37.5 hours per week.


 


The Organization


The National Women’s Law Center fights for gender justice—in the courts, in public policy, and in our society—working across the issues that are central to the lives of women and girls.


 


We use the law in all its forms to change culture and drive solutions to the gender inequity that shapes our society and to break down the barriers that harm all of us—especially those who face multiple forms of discrimination, including women of color, LGBTQ people, and low-income women and families.

Responsibilities

  • Write an array of pieces and content, from blogs, scripts, social copy, and emails to op-eds, opinion pieces, remarks, and letters to the editor;
  • Manage the Law Center’s internal editorial pipeline, while also working with our press team to strategically tailor pieces to outlets as needed;
  • Edit and proofread writing from NWLC staff;
  • Cultivate the Law Center’s blog, including setting consistent editorial standards and soliciting and guiding content from programmatic staff;
  • Initiate ideas for written content across channels;
  • Work across the Law Center to ensure consistent editorial messaging across the organization, including shaping voice and tone to be consistent with NWLC’s style and brand;
  • Recruit and manage a diverse pool of freelance writers;
  • Write and edit marketing copy, such as brochures, merchandise emails, and high-level web content;
  • Write annual reports and other fundraising materials;and
  • Help to develop the Law Center style guide under the direction of the Director of Strategic Communications.


Qualifications


The ideal candidate must possess:

  • At least two years of relevant experience in communications or marketing;
  • Extraordinary writing skills and experience writing, but full-time writing experience is not required;
  • Strong analytic and critical thinking skills;
  • Ability to communicate in an engaging, passionate style even when writing about complicated policies or analysis;
  • Demonstrated ability for absorbing and distilling large amounts of often wonky information and conveying it in a compelling, concise, and reader-friendly way;
  • The ability to write for different audiences, in different voices and tones, and under deadline pressure;
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of team;
  • The ability to tie pop culture moments with policy priorities to create relatable public narratives;
  • A desire for both a collegial team environment and the ability to work independently;
  • An eye for details; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience working on gender and racial equity and centering communities of color in their approach to work.  


Key Relationships

This role will report to the Director of Strategic Communications, in the Campaigns and Communications Department, and work closely with all members of the Content/Creative Team, as well as with staff across the center.



Compensation & Benefits

A salary within the range of $85,490-100,080 will be provided to the successful candidate who has at least two years of experience directly relevant to this role, consistent with the National Women’s Law Center’s compensation framework. The successful candidate’s salary within this range will be determined by the number years of relevant experience they bring to the role. 


The Center offers a comprehensive benefits package, and four weeks of annual vacation.


NWLC is a nonprofit organization whose headquarters and staff are based in Washington, D.C.  This role is designated as remote but will be expected to work from one of the states in which NWLC is licensed to do business: DC, MD, VA, NJ, OR, PA, IL, IN, NY, OH, GA, CT, or TN. The successful candidate will need to live in or relocate to one of these states. 


The first 90 days of employment will be considered a probationary period. 


 


Classification


NWLC recognizes a staff bargaining unit, NWLC United, affiliated with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union/IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is included in NWLC’s bargaining unit. Specific employment terms are subject to collective bargaining.
