The National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) improves the lives of one in five who struggle with brain-based learning and attention issues. These include learning disabilities and attention disorders, related to reading, writing, math, organization, and executive functioning. As the leading nonprofit organization for learning and attention issues, NCLD empowers parents and young adults, transforms schools and creates policy and advocacy impact.

Position Summary

The development associate serves as a key member of NCLD’s development team and is responsible for supporting donor cultivation and stewardship through event management and outreach. A highly organized individual with strong relational skills, the associate facilitates the planning of key cultivation events and cross-departmental activities, including the annual benefit dinner, VIP cultivation events, and board meetings. Towards that end, the associate also oversees NCLD’s Salesforce system to ensure regular communication with donors and strategic advancement of relationships. This position is based in Washington, DC. 

Key Responsibilities 

● Manages preparation and execution of events designed to raise funds and cultivate relationships for NCLD. Events may include VIP dinners, expert panels, regional meeting series, school visits, and more. 

● Works alongside the event consultant to plan the organization’s Annual Benefit Dinner, including oversight of mailing lists, acknowledgments, and workplan. 

● Ensures the evaluation of event activities through briefings summarizing purpose, cost, attendance, and (as appropriate) funds raised. 

● Supports the President & CEO with the preparation of board meeting materials each quarter, including the board book and presentation slide decks. 

● Oversees the department’s Grants Tracker and Salesforce system, to enable frequent and planned cultivation and stewardship communications with potential and current donors. 

● Conducts outreach to a small portfolio of mid-level donors, and supports the strategy and execution behind donor appeal and stewardship mailings. 

● Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications 

● Bachelor’s degree required. 

● 2-4 years work experience required, preferably in a nonprofit environment.

● Must be detail-oriented and extremely well-organized. 

● Must have experience in event preparation and execution. 

● Strong writing and editing abilities. 

● Demonstrated project management capabilities. 

● Ability to work independently with little supervision. 

● Computer proficient with Google Drive and fundraising database management programs (e.g., Salesforce) preferred. 

● Works well under pressure and manages stress well. 

● Strong work ethic and high standards for personal and professional excellence.

● Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and discretion. 

● Strong professionalism and ability to interact with high-level donors. 

● Sense of humor; positive attitude. 

● Passion and commitment to NCLD’s mission. 

● Ability to work flexible hours, as needed.

Travel: This position will require at least 10% and up to 20% travel for internal meetings and retreats, as well as conferences and other events.

Salary range: $70–$75,000 depending on experience.
