The Tanzanian Children’s Fund (TCF) works to eliminate poverty and improve the lives of marginalized children and families in the Oldeani area of northern Tanzania through our non-profit organization Rift Valley Children’s Fund (RVCF). With an annual budget of approximately $3 million USD, our goal is to ensure that all children and families in this region have the opportunity to lead healthy, secure, and fulfilling lives. Through four programmatic areas - a children’s home (Rift Valley Children’s Village), a health clinic, educational partnerships with local schools, and an economic opportunity program - we endeavor to provide a community of 10,000 with all the tools, systems and opportunities they need to find a path out of generational poverty.

TCF is seeking an experienced and skilled Managing Director. The ideal person in this role will be an adaptable, team-building, problem solver who is excited to join our team in Tanzania. This is a full-time contract position, responsible for overseeing daily operations of the Rift Valley Children’s Fund (RVCF) and its programs. The Managing Director, Programs and Operations will be a member of the senior leadership team with a direct relationship with the Board of Directors. Due to a continually changing work environment and the evolving stage of RVCF,  duties of this position may change during the period of employment, following mutual agreement between the Managing Director and the Tanzanian Children’s Fund.

Responsibilities of the Managing Director, Programs and Operations, include but are not limited to:

Leadership

  • Participate in a shared leadership model for Rift Valley Children’s Fund with the co-founder who is the Managing Director of Government and Community Affairs 
  • Lead staff in understanding TCF’s mission, vision, and core values
  • Ensure all programs and activities align with strategic vision
  • Work with the Board of Directors and other senior staff to develop TCF’s new 5 year strategic plan launching in 2025
  • Envision and lead overall organizational culture strategies, includes developing high-performing staff members and identifying mentoring / growth opportunities

Strategic Management

  • In partnership with Program Directors, develop, lead and implement systems that increase efficiency and effectiveness of team efforts across all RVCF functions
  • Working in partnership with the Managing Director, Strategy and Development, review implementation plans to execute strategic agenda
  • In partnership with the Board Chair and other Managing Directors, execute bi-annual BOD meetings, including preparing agendas and materials 
  • In partnership with Board Chair and US Director, execute monthly BOD calls, including preparing materials 

Financial Oversight

  • Ensure sustainable stewardship of funding and practice fiscal responsibility in operations
  • Review monthly audit of accounts and ensure compliance with annual audit requirements
  • Work with the Director of Finance and Operations to ensure accounting functions are carried out with a high level of efficiency and integrity
  • Work with the Director of Finance and Operations to refine financial systems as needed
  • In partnership with the BOD and other Managing Directors conduct an annual budgeting review of salaries for staff at RVCF

Staff Management 

  • Manage and mentor the following program leads: 
  • Director of Finance and Operations
  • Director of Child Welfare
  • Director of Education
  • Director of Rifty Economic Advancement Program
  • Director of Health
  • Volunteer Coordinator
  • Lead and develop high-performance teams working toward set objectives
  • Oversee work planning to ensure aligned goal setting and coordinated schedules amongst staff and volunteers
  • Conduct performance reviews for program leads; support program leaders in conducting reviews for all senior staff
  • Strengthen channels for input and feedback between staff and leadership 
  • Support the HR Manager in corresponding with all TZ staff, including hiring and dismissals; participate in staff recruitment processes as needed/requested

Development 

  • Oversee RVCF visitor program in collaboration with the Director of Development and Communications, the Volunteer Coordinator and the Founder
  • In cooperation with the Managing Director, Strategy and Development, assist with scheduling visits to RVCF for larger donors, including visits to program sites

Specific requirements include: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, education, social work, public health or similar field. Master’s degree preferred. 
  • Track record of effectively leading an international organization and staff
  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities; unwavering commitment to quality programs and achieving objectives
  • Candidate must be outgoing, friendly, easygoing, and open-minded to different experiences and cultures
  • Past experience working with a Board of Directors 
  • Ability to manage and be accountable for the handling of confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to thrive living in a rural setting in Africa
  • Must love kids as you will be working on a campus home to 100 children!
  • Proficiency in English required. Some Swahili preferred.
