Description

The Equal Justice Center is seeking an experienced attorney to join our Immigration Project.  Our Immigration Project currently focuses on a combination of direct representation of immigrants and community activism to protect immigrant families. We provide direct immigration representation on affirmative applications and petitions, including DALE, DACA, advance parole, T visas, U Visas, VAWA, SIJS, and limited family-based petitions, adjustment of status and naturalization. We also conduct community outreach and education regarding DALE, DACA, other immigration protections, and basic immigrant rights.

In addition, the EJC Immigration Project attorney works in close collaboration with our dynamic team of employment attorneys and dedicated staff, to provide intersectional legal services for our low-wage, immigrant employment justice clients, including on labor trafficking and workplace exploitation cases. Along with our immigration work, the EJC is the leading public interest law firm in Texas specialized in employment litigation for low-wage working people, regardless of their immigration status – including especially undocumented immigrants.  From offices in Austin, Houston, and San Antonio, the EJC represents low-wage workers throughout Texas in cases involving wage theft, employment discrimination, workplace retaliation, workplace sexual assault, labor trafficking and employment rights of immigrants. The EJC also advocates for systemic reform to lift wages and improve workplace rights and conditions for low-wage workers, and to uphold the rights of the immigrant community. Accordingly, this position presents a unique opportunity to practice traditional immigration law in combination with plaintiffs’ employment law for low-wage workers.

In addition, as the immigration landscape evolves through litigation and possibly under a new administration, the Immigration Project will engage in legal representation, outreach and advocacy responding to potential new immigration challenges and opportunities impacting low-wage immigrant workers and their families.

The EJC highly values collaboration and strong collegial comradery. In addition to working closely with other EJC attorneys, the Immigration Project attorney works in close collaboration with other public interest and private attorneys, immigrant rights advocates, and low-income communities. The Immigration Project attorney will also supervise, in conjunction with other EJC attorneys, a legal fellow, law student interns, and undergraduate interns.

The Immigration Project attorney position ideally will be based in EJC’s Austin office but will also collaborate with EJC’s staff in Houston and San Antonio.  The position may involve some limited state-wide travel and collaboration with community partners across the state.  Spanish is preferred, but not required.  We are seeking an attorney with expertise in immigration law and/or expertise in employment law with immigration law experience. A minimum of two years’ experience is required.

The attorney will be paid a salary commensurate with the attorney’s experience and EJC’s competitive public interest salary scale.  The EJC’s generous benefits package for full-time employees includes health, dental and vision insurance coverage, retirement, access to law school loan repayment, flexible work hours, opportunity for a hybrid schedule or remote work, and a generous paid leave policy.

The position is open beginning July 15, 2024, but the start date is flexible. The position is, by design, highly adaptable in order to secure the right committed and creative colleague. There is flexibility to make this either a part-time or full-time position.
