Background:

The Southern California Association of Non-Profit Housing (SCANPH) is a regional, membership organization advocating for the production, preservation and management of homes affordable to low income people throughout the Southern California region. Our roughly 500 organizational members are based primarily in Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Riverside and San Bernardino counties and include non-profit housing developers, private businesses, property management companies, government agencies and social service organizations. In its policy work, SCANPH engages decision makers at the local, regional, state and federal level. Our work includes advocating for and commenting on policy initiatives and regulatory rulings that impact our members’ ability to develop affordable housing. It also includes building the power of our members and the affordable housing residents to support legislation that makes it easier to build and access affordable housing. In some cases, SCANPH initiates and leads public policy campaigns designed to enhance our members’ work.

Organizing Associate:

This role aims to support SCANPH’s advocacy and organizing work by focusing on resident engagement and helping aid the organization’s campaign efforts for the 2024 election year. This position will report to the Advocacy and Organizing Manager and work alongside SCANPH’s policy team to support the various affordable housing ballot measures in the upcoming year. This position will report to the Advocacy and Organizing Manager and work alongside SCANPH’s policy team to support the various affordable housing ballot measures in the upcoming year.

Responsibilities:

Assist in the creation and execution of an organizing strategy that effectively engages the SCANPH membership as well as the residents of SCANPH member properties - plan membership “get out the vote” events, voter registration drives and other civic engagement efforts.

● Assist in affordable housing resident powerbuilding by co-leading the Resident United Network (RUN) LA. RUN is made up of affordable housing residents in Los Angeles that want to engage in the political process - the Organizing Associate will help plan base building events, lead RUN meetings and grow the capacity of the individual members.

● Actively participate in campaign coalition committees, working alongside other nonprofit partners on various 2024 ballot initiatives.

● Draft campaign communications to inform and engage membership on SCANPH’s campaign activities, canvassing and signature gathering events.

● Help foster relationships within SCANPH’s membership, including affordable housing developers, resident services managers and affordable housing residents to allow for effective campaign organizing and mobilization.

● Plan and execute canvassing events, petition and signature gathering initiatives.

● Help track and manage campaign fundraising efforts.

● Lead SCANPH’s candidate questionnaire effort and help host candidate forums to provide SCANPH members with knowledge on current candidate’s positions on affordable housing.

● Help support the creation of a Housing Justice Advocacy Communications Committee - a group that seeks to aid the shared narrative efforts of the affordable housing industry to promote effective housing policy. This includes drafting invites, managing meeting logistics and helping develop agendas.

Qualifications:

● Commitment to Equity and Housing Justice: This role requires a strong commitment to equity and housing justice, as well as a basic understanding of the current housing landscape and experience in organizing community members.

● In-Person Community Engagement and Organizing: The ability and enthusiasm to travel throughout the LA region and collaborate with others in person is essential, as this role will require the attendance of various community events across the greater LA region, including rallies and door-to-door outreach. Access to transportation in order to easily move materials and supplies for outreach events is required.

● Proactive and Independent: The ideal candidate should be enthusiastic about diving into the work, with the ability to independently draft, execute, and follow through on organizing plans.

● Campaign Experience: At least one year of successful campaign work or political organizing experience is required, but does not need to be from the affordable housing field.

● Effective Communication Skills: The ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and persuasively to a diverse audience (residents of affordable housing, CBOs, elected officials etc.) is crucial for this role. This includes in-person one-on-one conversations, small group discussions, addressing large audiences, as well as written communication via email, newsletters, and social media. Familiarity with use of Googlesuit and Microsoft Word and Excel is a must. Ability to speak Spanish is a plus.

● Detail-Oriented and Self-Motivated: The candidate should be detail-oriented, self-motivated, able to multitask, provide quick responses, and highly organized.

● Work Schedule: The candidate must be willing to work a hybrid schedule, with at least one day in the office per week (subject to change). SCANPH will provide you a laptop for office and at-home use.

At SCANPH, we are committed to considering job candidates from diverse educational, professional, and lived experience backgrounds, including those from sectors that intersect with the affordable housing industry.
