Description

Trees New York is seeking two seasonal environmental educators to assist with our Young Urban Forester summer internship. The internship introduces students to urban forestry conservation, restoration and planning and environmental careers. Participants complete several hands-on projects: tree stewardship projects, tree inventory and data collection and maintenance. Additional topics include urban agriculture, green infrastructure, air and water quality.

Tree Stewardship Activities include: removing litter and weeds from the tree beds, cultivating the soil, watering, mulching and pruning. Visit treesny.org to learn more about the program.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the instruction of urban forestry topics to 12-15 high school students under the direction of the director of education and the environmental educator of youth programs
  • Implement tree stewardship and maintenance projects at least three times a week
  • Track participants’ progress, hours and paperwork such as timesheets
  • Plan and coordinate field trips
  • Serve as support personnel for special projects
  • Other general office and clerical duties as needed

Qualifications

  • Experience working with youth preferred
  • Working towards a degree in Biology, Environmental Studies, Urban Studies, Urban Planning, Geography or Education
  • Must enjoy working outdoors

Schedule:

June 17, 2024 – June 30, 2024 (15-21 hours/week) Monday through Thursday

July 1, 2024 - August 16, 2024 (32-40 hours/week) Monday through Thursday 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
