LOST IN NEW HAVEN, INC. is a unique and exciting kind of history museum, cultural center and event space that fosters community learning and engagement by providing a space at the intersection of art, history and culture to educate, inspire and enrich our understanding of history and ourselves. The museum creates an immersive experience of history through its presentation of an amazing collection of artifacts which tell the story of the creativity and ingenuity of New Haveners over the last 400 years. Its exhibits and programs celebrate tangible history and culture through the materials of manufacturing and commerce, arts and everyday existence. It pioneers an inclusive approach to history, inviting visitors to contribute to this ongoing project by sharing their own stories and experiences. LOST is dedicated to preserving and promoting history through its collection of tangible relics of the past, animating these historical artifacts to ensure that their stories continue to inspire and educate future generations. The Director of Finance and Operations will play a pivotal role in establishing the museum’s operational excellence, financial sustainability and strategic growth while supporting the fulfillment of the Executive Director’s programmatic and artistic vision.

 

Job  Description

 

We are seeking a dynamic self-starter with experience building organizations from the ground up. We seek someone who can develop and implement systems for the successful growth and development of the not-for-profit side of our organization. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Finance and Operations will oversee the financial, operational and strategic side of our enterprise.  You will wear many hats as one of our first employees, taking on a range of financial, operational and development tasks as we expand our presence, impact and budget.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

1.         Financial Management and Development

 

·      Implement financial policies, procedures and controls to safeguard the Museum’s assets and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements

·      Establish and oversee all bookkeeping, accounting and recordkeeping functions

·      Prepare monthly financial reports for the Board  and Executive Director

·       Work with our bookkeeper, accountant and auditor to ensure compliance with best practices

·      Evaluate and advise the ED on the purchase of appropriate CRM and POS  systems

·      Work with Treasurer, Finance Committee,  and Business Advisory Committee  to address the financial sustainability of the organization

·      Oversee development of revenue streams, fundraising efforts and grant applications to support the Museum’s programs and initiatives, and identify new funding opportunities

·      Build and oversee the organization’s capacity for fundraising and development through strategic hiring and infrastructure building

 

2.         Operational Leadership

 

·      Work with the Board and Executive Director to fine tune staffing and hiring plan

·      Create job descriptions and post as appropriate

·      Oversee day to day operations, including visitor services, event space booking, facility management and administrative functions

·      Help develop and oversee plans for the extensive use of volunteers, docents and interns

·      Inspire and motivate a diverse team of professionals, fostering a culture of collaboration, creativity and excellence

·      Build and manage a team of staff and volunteers providing leadership, mentorship and support

·      Oversee team working on marketing, PR and social media and community connection

 

Qualifications

 

·       Proven experience in not-for-profit leadership with a track record of success in building and growing organizations

·      Strong financial skills with experience budgeting, financial management, and fundraising

·      Excellent organizational skills, able to manage multiple priorities effectively and efficiently

·      Entrepreneurial mindset, passion for creating something new and building something important

·      Bachelors, degree in Business Administration, nonprofit management, museum studies, or related fields, Masters degree preferred.
