Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) Manhattan, a partnership of Bard College and the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE), invites applications for a part-time leave position in Computer Science. 

BHSEC, a national model in the field of public-school reform, provides talented and highly motivated students the opportunity to move in four years from the ninth grade through the first two years of college, earning an associate of arts (A.A.) degree from Bard College as well as a high school diploma.  The academic program emphasizes small class size and a commitment to teaching a diverse student body in a liberal arts environment.

Job Description

The Computer Science program at BHSEC Manhattan offers introductory courses for our high school and college students. The successful applicant(s) will co-teach an after school computer science from 3:45-5:00 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays from now through early June. S/he will then individually lead a summer course for three weeks, which will meet five days a week. The curriculum for the high school will follow the current Code Nation programming. (We are applying to be part of a corporate partnership, which will support our computer science work, and produce further opportunities for course offerings.)

Compensation: The compensation for this position is $8,000.

Job Type: Part-time, Temporary Leave Replacement Position

Location: Bard High School Early College, Manhattan, NY campus.  525 E Houston Street, New York, NY

Period of Employment: This position is meant to be a short-term leave replacement position.  The duration is late April 2024 through the end of July 2024

Qualifications

The Computer Science program at BHSEC Manhattan cultivates programming languages to creatively express those concepts. Experience teaching students between the ages of 14 and 18, a commitment to scholarship, and a commitment to teaching a diverse student body are desirable.  Interest in working with high school age students who are also completing a college-level course of study is needed. We are seeking candidates with a strong commitment to equity and social justice and desire to open up opportunities for underrepresented students. An ability to develop curriculum would be highly desirable, but not required.
