Imagine a school kids run towards and a synagogue where all can come together for social justice, study, and Shabbat. Ever since SAJ introduced America’s first bat mitzvah in 1922, it has been reconstructing Judaism, wrestling with God, questioning tradition and expanding its boundaries to ensure that Torah remains relevant, engaging, and welcoming to all.


SAJ is hiring a full time communications and program coordinator. This critical member of the team will be responsible for managing our communications and creating a welcoming environment, coordinating our exciting programs and performing administrative tasks to allow SAJ to remain the vibrant, responsive and responsible community we are. This is a position with enormous growth potential for the right candidate who is interested in developing a career in the social justice or nonprofit sectors. 


The communications and program coordinator will be a full-time employee at SAJ, working in person Tuesday-Friday in our beautiful Upper West Side building, with the option to work remotely on Mondays.  


Responsibilities:

Communications

  • Manage weekly newsletter production and distribution with input from team
  • Generate and send Yartzeit Reminder Letters
  • Compose and send one-off emails including reminders for upcoming programming, life cycle announcements or other needs as directed by Rabbi or Executive Director
  • Edit videos from Shabbat services and programming and post to Youtube and website 
  • Update website with current events and other changes as needed
  • Create and manage social media posts 
  • Create weekly Shabbat Poster with programs and locations in the building and any other special signage

Communal 

  • Greet students as they arrive for B’nai Mitzvah lessons
  • Interact personably with congregants and ensure their needs are met as well as possible
  • Respond to member’s requests via email
  • Respond to inquiries about the congregation as they are received
  • Create and distribute (via shulcloud) weekly newsletters
  • Manage membership application process

Program Coordination

  • Work with SAJ’s Rabbi to implement the programming at SAJ 
  • Manage membership database (Shulcloud), ensuring the accuracy and validity of information
  • Create registration links for upcoming programming (i.e. shulcloud registrations for speakers, etc)
  • Manage SAJ’s Zoom needs, including generating new Zoom links for programs and meetings 
  • Provide logistical support for SAJ’s programming
  • Generate reports for weekly Shabbat preparations and photocopy as necessary
  • Place food orders for Shabbat and special programs 
  • Manage administrative needs and support the executive team 


Qualifications

Must Haves

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with experience producing accurate and professional communications, ideally adept across multiple communication platforms
  • Proven ability to organize and prioritize tasks and projects, and follow through on long- and short-term responsibilities
  • Expertise with core computer applications such as Microsoft Office & Google Drive and experience learning/developing proficiency in new, cloud-based software (bonus points for experience with any/all of Zoom, ShulCloud, WordPress, and Canva)
  • Ability to quickly learn synagogue database/CRM system, Shulcloud 
  • Be a collaborative team player
  • Experience in social media management 
  • Basic wordpress knowledge
  • Full time availability with the ability to work in person four days a week
  • Experience supporting senior leaders with projects, schedules, and other administrative needs

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with the basic structures and systems of synagogue life, such as a general understanding of the Jewish calendar. 
  • Experience with ShulCloud
  • Graphic design skills 
  • Availability on occasional Saturdays

Compensation and benefits

  • $20-$25 per hour based on experience
