Organization Background:

For more than 20 years, Socially Responsible Agriculture Project (SRAP) has served as a mobilizing force to collaborate with communities to protect themselves from the damages caused by industrial livestock operations and to advocate for a food system built on regenerative practices, justice, democracy, and resilience.

Our team includes technical experts, independent family farmers, and rural residents who have faced the threats of factory farms in their communities. When asked for help, SRAP offers free support, providing communities with the knowledge and skills to protect their right to clean water, air, and soil and to a healthy, just, and vibrant future.


Position Overview:

SRAP’s Communications Director is responsible for developing and implementing the organization’s communications, marketing, and public relations strategies. The Communications Director will report to SRAP’s Deputy Director.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Communications Strategy:

  • Develop and execute an organizational communications plan in collaboration with senior staff to engage constituents, build brand recognition, and foster awareness of SRAP’s core issues.
  • Create communications and marketing strategies for new campaigns, projects, and events.
  • Define and track key performance indicators for SRAP’s communications efforts to establish goals, evaluate effectiveness, and inform future strategy.

Media Engagement:

  • Spearhead SRAP’s media engagement efforts to help SRAP gain exposure in local, regional, and national outlets.
  • Draft press releases and create press kits and marketing materials.
  • Establish SRAP media protocol and facilitate trainings to brief staff and community constituents on core messaging and best media practices.
  • Oversee tracking and circulation of media and social media coverage of SRAP’s work.

Content Production and Digital Asset Management:

Manage and support the communications team’s efforts to produce print and digital content, including the following:

  • Develop and maintain SRAP’s website.
  • Manage SRAP’s social media accounts.
  • Develop marketing and communications collateral.
  • Manage SRAP’s email marketing efforts and contact database.
  • Produce SRAP’s bi-monthly newsletter.
  • Draft written content, including blog posts, community stories, and event announcements.
  • Produce webinars, videos, and other multimedia content.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage SRAP communications staff and consultants. Participate in hiring communications staff and consultants.
  • Support SRAP staff by editing written content,
  • including fundraising appeals, grant reports, white papers, blog posts, and other materials.
  • Represent SRAP at events as needed.
  • Provide additional support to the organization as needed.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or other relevant field preferred.
  • Minimum five years of experience in a similar role.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, and expert knowledge of communication practices and techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising employees and/or consultants.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workplace suites. Experience with WordPress and email marketing services preferred.
  • Ability to multitask and work well under pressure.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
  • Commitment to SRAP’s mission and core values of environmental and social justice.


Work Environment: 

This position is fully remote with occasional evening hours and travel expected. Applicants must reside in the United States. This is a full-time, exempt position.

Compensation: 

Salary of $72,000 to $82,000, dependent upon experience. Benefits include fully covered health, vision, dental, and life insurance; monthly communications stipend; annual wellness stipend; a 403(b) retirement plan; and generous paid time off.
