Description

Fair Elections Center is a national, nonpartisan, non-profit voting rights and election reform organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. Our mission is to use litigation and advocacy to remove barriers to registration and voting, particularly those disenfranchising underrepresented and marginalized communities, and to improve election administration. 

Fair Elections Center is seeking a full-time Paralegal to join our Legal Team. The Paralegal will support our attorneys’ work related to litigation, advocacy, policy, and other activities. This is a permanent position that will report to the Director of Litigation and the Director of Policy.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Providing support for the editing, formatting (including creating tables of contents and authorities), production, cite-checking, proofreading and filing of pleadings, briefs, exhibits, legislative testimony and other documents.
  • Managing and organizing files for all active and archived inactive cases, including downloading all electronically filed documents and organizing Fair Elections Center’s case files. 
  • Assist attorneys with processing incoming and outgoing documents, communications and discovery.
  • Under the direction of attorneys, manage administrative and logistical aspects of litigation, such as organizing discovery requests and responses, coordinating depositions, etc.
  • Organize and manage documents and folders containing all filings and discovery, including the creation of spreadsheets and retrieval systems.
  • Act as liaison among all parties, as needed, particularly on scheduling and discovery matters.
  • Providing administrative and technical support, particularly with respect to PowerPoint presentations,  for court hearings, trials, oral arguments, and other speaking engagements.
  • Research case-related factual issues using in-house files and outside reference sources.
  • Compile information and prepare statistics, charts, graphs, and other summaries to detail the findings.
  • Provide support for and schedule events and meetings. 
  • Stay informed about court rules, local rules, and internal court operating procedures, including deadlines.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Paralegal certification from an ABA-accredited program or associate’s degree in paralegal studies preferred 
  • A minimum of two years experience in a paralegal or legal assistant role
  • Must have civil litigation experience, with some federal court experience strongly preferred
  • Must have experience with cite-checking, formatting, proofreading, and filing legal briefs
  • Must have experience with document management and organization for cases
  • Experience with discovery and e-discovery preferred but not required
  • Strong research skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Experience with PACER and CM/ECF (any jurisdiction)
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to multitask and prioritize work to ensure timely completion

This is a full-time, remote position with a salary range of $68,000 - $73,000, depending on experience. Candidates do not need to relocate to the Washington, D.C. area. Some travel will be required for advocacy, hearing and trial dates, coalition meetings, and speaking engagements.
