About the NYC Quakers a/k/a - the New York Quarterly Meeting 


We are the hub for Quakers and other social activists in the New York City area. We use our historic meeting houses in Manhattan and Brooklyn for worship and as organizing venues for “good trouble.” In the last year, we’ve hosted teen punk rock shows, a rock opera, and served as launch pads for our participation in the Pride parade and End Fossil Fuels march. We also host meetings for worship every Sunday.  We are looking to reinvent faith and activism in NYC and beyond. We seek to put Quaker values of simplicity, peace, community, integrity, equality, and stewardship into action. 

Position Overview

As a Community Organizer, you will be instrumental in advancing our mission of blending faith with activism. You will be responsible for organizing, coordinating, and promoting a wide range of events and initiatives that align with our core values of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality and stewardship. Your role will involve engaging with diverse communities, building partnerships, and fostering a spirit of activism both within the Quaker community and beyond it to help create connections that celebrate, elevate and advocate for our shared humanity. This role reports directly to the Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities


  • Plan, organize, and execute various events, including workshops, marches, meetings and community gatherings.
  • Develop and implement outreach strategies to grow our community and expand our participation and impact.
  • Coordinate with volunteers and manage event logistics to ensure smooth execution.
  • Engage and collaborate with local communities, activists, and organizations to foster partnerships and support for our initiatives. Represent the organization in various community and networking events to enhance visibility and impact.  
  • Support Quaker committees by understanding their needs, and putting needed resources in place to bolster their success. Facilitate smooth communication between volunteers and staff. 
  • Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications

  • Experience in community organizing, event planning, or related fields.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse groups.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
  • Creative thinker with strong problem-solving skills.
  •  ~ 5 years  experience in volunteer management and community engagement is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace, Slack, and modern community organizing tools, including social media.
  • Passionate about social activism and aligned with Quaker values.
  • Familiarity with Quaker process and structures

The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and other business and organizational needs. 


At the New York Quarterly Meeting it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
