This is a 12-month position which is exempt and therefore not eligible for overtime pay under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

In the following categories a School Counselor at Capital City is expected to: 


Consultation

  • Provide recommendations to administration and staff on how to better meet social, emotional and academic needs of students.
  • Provide recommendations to administration and staff on how to help families support students in the aforementioned goal.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and administration to find effective solutions for meeting learning and behavior needs.
  • Participate in Inclusion Team, Child Study, MDT, and Consult meetings with teaching teams.
  • Provide information regarding community services available to students and families; make appropriate referrals as needed. Be well-informed about community resources.
  • Create a resource bank of information regarding relevant community services.
  • Meet regularly with the DSP and DSS to coordinate and plan for student needs


Intervention

  • Collaborate with the DSP and DSS to provide effective interventions for students.
  • Provide counseling services to students to help resolve and manage problems that interfere with school performance.
  • Meet with families to help address their needs and the needs of their children.
  • Lead and coordinate the campus’ home visit team.
  • Act as the point of contact/ liaison with social service and or community agencies providing services to students.
  • Act as the point of contact/liaison for families with high needs including students experiencing homelessness.
  • Report any pertinent information to the proper authorities in cases of child endangerment, neglect or abuse.
  • Respond to crisis situations in tandem with colleagues and community personnel.
  • Maintain accurate records of all psychological/ counseling/ social services rendered to students and teacher requests for consultation.
  • Lead and/or participate in the Child Study process as mutually agreed upon with the DSS.


Prevention

  • Support and understand the Responsive Classroom and Expeditionary Learning models that our school implements.
  • Identify and/or develop programs for children at risk of failing at school, based on needs assessments.
  • Implement and deliver programs and strategies to improve school climate, based on consultation, collaboration and observation at all grade levels
  • Provide in-service training to faculty and parents as needed
  • Collaborate with school staff and community agencies to provide services directed at improving psychological and physical health of students.
  • Work with the DSS and administrative staff to monitor attendance as a marker of potential risk.
  • Communicate with CCPCS community members about Counselor role and opportunities.


Other School Responsibilities

  • Participate in a summer staff development institute held the last two weeks in August.
  • Attend and actively participate in Professional Development Time on Wednesdays from 1:45-4:15.
  • Seek out additional opportunities for professional development that will lead to achieving personal and school-wide professional development goals.
  • Attend and participate in school events. Capital City staff are expected to attend at least two community meetings per year.
  • Make visitors to the school feel welcome.
