About Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition (TASSC)

The Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition (TASSC) International is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization that provides services to survivors of torture. TASSC recognizes the psychological effects of torture and assists survivors with their immediate medical, legal, housing and employment needs. TASSC’s wraparound services are designed to encourage and supplement the efforts of survivors who come to us seeking independence, self-sufficiency, and healthy futures. Four programs are the cornerstones of our work and address the main areas of concern for many survivors: social, psychological, legal, and advocacy. All members of TASSC are eligible for services that are provided with personalized and purposeful support. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Welcomes new survivors to establish contact with community members.
• Determines eligibility with all new TASSC survivors, and supervises an assessment to determine clients’ strengths, needs, resources and support systems.
• Supports the new survivors in orienting to the local community, navigate acculturation concerns, and provide resources to improve quality of life.
• Completes registration form and intakes to assess for survivor needs and connecting them to resources.
• Manages relationships with partner organizations and develops systems to ensure coordination of care and communication between TASSC and partners’ staff.
• Collects and analyzes resource navigation and client information and examines the needs of the community.
• Convenes and actively participates in case consultation sessions with the TASSC legal team.
• Actively works to improve and enhance social service delivery at TASSC.
• Supports in developing procedural manuals and other materials for program.
• Participates in grant strategy meetings and proposal review.
• Performs other indirect service activities that may include: data gathering, monthly reporting, proposal writing, developing outreach materials, and other work as assigned by the Executive Director. Maintains records to assess progress.
• Maintains communication with survivors who receive or have received assistance from TASSC.
• Encourages particpation in TASSC’s Communities of Healing, Truth Speakers, advocacy programs (when appropriate), and other TASSC events.
• Participates in all staff meetings as required
• Demonstrates the core values of the organization in all areas of work
• Performs other related duties as assigned

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor's degree in social or human services and/or at least three years progressively responsible experience in adult or youth program development. MSW preferred.
• Knowledge of asylum and refugee resettlement issues and relevant programs required.
• Extensive knowledge of social service system and providers in the DMV area required
• Ability to track and monitor the effectiveness of programs using a database
• Minium 2 years of experience providing case management in a human services environment that supports a holistic, systemic approach to service delivery.
• Minimum 2 years working with forced migrant or vulnerable populations.
• Multicultural sensitivity and ability to provide culturally responsive services to a diverse immigrant population, including ability to work with interpreters.
• Strong understanding of trauma and trauma-informed service delivery.
• Ability to develop client relationships and facilitate effective assessment and referral and empower the client to help themselves when appropriate.
• Fluency in a second language a plus.

• Self-motivated, confident, and comfortable working in stressful situations.
• Trauma-informed and sensitive listening and communication skills.
• A commitment to learning about the effects of torture on survivors, families, and communities
• Utmost level of confidentiality and sensitivity in working with survivors of torture.
• Bilingual in Amharic, Tigrinya, French, or Arabic speaker preferred.

TASSC provides a competitive benefits package which includes 80% covered medical and dental, 403B, Ruth 403B options, 120 hours (about 5 days) vacation in the first year, 96 hours (about 4 days) personal/sick time, 13 paid holidays, and a week off between Christmas and New Year’s.
