This transportation planning position will be located in DVRPC’s Office of Transit, Bicycle, and Pedestrian Planning (OTBP) and time will be dedicated to the office’s portfolio of work. Staff in OTBP focus on public transit, bicycle, and pedestrian research, design and analysis, mainly through programs and planning studies that use integrated approaches that often include transportation, land use, design, and analysis. Focus is also on integrating these modes with one another, along with their community and development context. OTBP’s major ongoing work includes:
projects through DVRPC’s tactical urbanism support program, supporting the City of Trenton with technical and staff support to implement Complete Streets and Vision Zero, and planning and technical analysis to advance SEPTA programs and goals.
Typical project tasks include finding patterns in transportation and demographic data, collaborating with regional stakeholders, and preparing reports that summarize study findings in a clear and concise manner using creative design, mapping, and illustration. This work benefits from the ability to think analytically, visually, and spatially. It requires a strong interest in multimodal transportation and creating goals and a vision for what that means for each project and program. It also requires competence with mapping and design software or the interest to learn. Applicants should be interested or have experience in communications strategy and messaging; public participation, outreach, and engagement activities; and be prepared to build and maintain relationships with traditional and non-traditional stakeholders.
Work is performed in accordance with broadly defined objectives and professional standards with the opportunity for independent judgment, subject to administrative and technical review by supervisory planner(s) in the unit during progress and upon completion. This position is based in DVRPC’s Philadelphia office with a hybrid work schedule that includes occasional travel throughout the DVRPC region for meetings and field visits.
To be classified as an RA I, a minimum of one year of professional experience in transportation or city/regional planning; and such training as may have been gained through graduation from a four-year college/university, with major course work in a planning-related discipline applicable to transportation planning is required. A minimum of three years of professional experience are needed to classify as an RA II. A Master’s degree can be substituted for one year of experience.
