Description

MIRANDA FAMILY FELLOWSHIPS Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, a national leader in the creation of innovative theatre, is launching the fourth cohort of its transformative fellowship program in partnership and with a lead gift from the Miranda Family Fund, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s family philanthropic fund. This ambitious workforce development program is designed to provide talented candidates from historically excluded communities, especially Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, with the job experience, resources and training necessary to build their careers as arts administrators or theatre technicians. For the next cohort of this program, Woolly Mammoth is thrilled to expand the program to two-years and to add a fourth fellowship position to meet our singular focus of developing the next generation of BIPOC leadership in the theatre.

Each fellowship is structured as a paid two year-long department-specific entry-level position with health insurance benefits. These positions are full-time nonexempt. The fellowships will take place over two years and begin in August 2024.  We will be accepting applications for the fourth cohort until Sunday, May 12, 2024 at 11:59PM.

Fellowships will be offered in the following departments: Connectivity, New Work & Artistic Producing, Marketing, and Production. Job descriptions can be found on the website.

Woolly Mammoth is committed to rooting out oppressive practices in the American theatre that have resulted in inequities and harm towards many would-be theatre makers. One such field-wide practice that rewards privilege and discourages inclusivity is the hiring of unpaid interns and apprentices — thus creating one of many barriers to entering the theatre industry.

The Miranda Family Fellows Program will disrupt this system by compensating fellows with full-time pay of $23.90/hour and health care benefits.  All compensation is subject to all statutory deductions and WMTC’s customary payroll practices. Through this exciting model, Woolly Mammoth and the Miranda Family Fund are shining a light on the need for greater equity, diversity, inclusion, and access behind the scenes in the American theatre, and creating a new point of entry into the field for the next generation of arts leaders.

Alongside position-specific duties, fellowship programming includes intra-departmental mentorship, professional development opportunities, site visits and performances at local performing arts organizations, and monthly conversations with industry leaders. To deepen their analysis of equity, diversity, inclusion, and access, and the role arts organizations can play in furthering movements for social justice, fellows will receive anti-racism and anti-oppression training and access to affinity spaces. There will be opportunities for peer networking, particularly as a part of the larger network of Miranda Family Fellows.

The first year of the fellowship will focus on providing fellows space to learn the intricacies of their role so that by year two they can take on more responsibilities and deepen their learning. This second year allows for more bespoke tracks for each fellow. For instance, a Marketing fellow with a special interest in casting could assist a producer on certain projects in year two or a Connectivity fellow with an interest in grant writing could collaborate with the development department for a Connectivity-focused grant. In addition to more bespoke tracks, the two-year span allows for more robust pedagogical and professional development programming within the fellowship program, helping fellows grow their skills and networks to prepare for the job market.
