UDW Resource Center Overview:

The UDW Resource Center (URC) is a dynamic nonprofit workers center that provides organizing support, training and education with caregivers in the public and private sectors throughout

California. URC is a space for these workers to organize themselves for better wages and working conditions, to change the care economy to benefit all Californians, and to organize for social, racial, and economic justice. We are dedicated to promoting the dignity and wellbeing of caregivers through leadership development, education, and material support such as food, housing, and healthcare. URC works in partnership with UDW/AFSCME Local 3930 on multiple projects and serves all home care and family child care providers regardless of union affiliation.

Job Title:  Executive Director - UDW Resource Center

Job Type:  Salary (Exempt)

Reports to: URC Board of Directors

Schedule:  In-person or Hybrid - Full Time, Monday to Friday 9:00AM to 6:00PM (office hours)

Job Location:  Based in San Diego or Santa Ana

Compensation: Starting salary between $90,000-$120,000 based on experience

Job Summary:  

URC seeks a passionate and resourceful Executive Director with labor and/or community organizing experience to help shape the work and growth of our organization. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced manager or director with the initiative and spirit to grow a new workers center to address the needs of a low-income, primarily women of color workforce in California. URC plans to support organizing of workers in the private sector of home care, is working with UDW on its historic partnership with the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, is supporting family child care providers and UDW in developing a new family child care apprenticeship program, and plans to

provide services to meet the needs of care givers (this could include criminal record expungement clinics, tax preparation, disaster relief, immigrant rights and citizenship classes, and affordable housing resources).

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Commitment to URC’s mission of organizing and providing training, educational support, and housing to the community and to our values of social, economic, and racial justice
  • Lead the development, implementation, and execution of the overall strategic plan and annual workplan in partnership with the Board of Directors.
  • Develop an organizing strategy and plan to support private sector home care workers to organize themselves
  • Fundraise for URC’s sustainability and develop relationships with potential and existing funders
  • Serve as the primary resource and support to the Board of Directors
  • Supervise and manage the staff

Management & Administration:

  • Recruit, hire, manage, and mentor a talented committed team.
  • Develop and maintain an organizational culture of openness, trust, inclusiveness, collaboration, and teamwork.
  • Ensure effective administration of operations including managing the annual budget, overseeing contracts with consultants, and developing an internal communications infrastructure.
  • Oversee financial management and operations.
  • Oversee the negotiation of contracts and agreements on behalf of URC.
  • Ensure compliance with by-laws and relevant laws and regulations.

Strategic Direction and Program Operations:

  • Lead annual and long-term strategic and programmatic planning in partnership with the Board of Directors and staff for all programs.
  • Ensure that programs and other work are implemented and in line with the overall strategic plan.
  • Facilitate evaluation of strategic and programmatic plans.
  • Ensure commitments made for grants and any other funding sources are achieved.

External Relations and Fundraising

  • Develop and maintain partnerships and relationships with other organizations and entities to further the work and the mission of URC.
  • Be the spokesperson for URC.
  • Maintain regular communication with key allies, community and elected leaders, and funders.
  • Oversee fundraising planning and implementation in coordination with the Board and staff.

Partnership with Board of Directors:

  • Provide primary support to Board of Directors for all meetings, activities, and responsibilities.
  • Ensure long-term plans for the organization are developed, evaluated regularly, and updated as needed.
  • Ensure effective communication between Board and staff.
  • Involve the Board in programmatic and fundraising activities as needed.
  • Assist the Board in identifying, recruiting, and utilizing Board members with the key skills to support the mission and work of URC.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Values:

Demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice

  • Experience in union, worker center, and/or community organizing
  • Knowledge and experience working with homecare and/or family childcare providers and/or in the labor movement
  • Knowledge, sensitivity, and understanding of the social, political, personal, and cross-cultural needs of the community and staff
  • Experience working in one or more of the following issue areas: workforce development, housing, worker justice, racial justice, welfare rights organizing
  • Effective communication skills: public speaking, writing, meeting facilitation, and consensus-building

·       Experience supervising and managing a diverse team

·      Experience with winning grants from foundations and/or government agencies

·       Excellent people and project management skills, including detail and action-orientation with

excellent follow-through skills and the ability to manage and keep track of multiple

priorities in a timely manner

·       Excellent planning and evaluation skills

·       Highly computer literate and proficient in Microsoft Suite

·       Ability to focus an organization and its resources, balancing competing needs and opportunities


Preferred

Qualifications, Education and/or Experience:

·       Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Labor Studies, Nonprofit Management, Political Science, Public Policy, or its equivalent

·       5-10 years successful senior leadership experience at a social impact organization

·       5-10 years of fundraising experience.

·       Experience with operating a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

·       Successful executive leadership experience in a nonprofit organization of comparable size

and scope and/or progressive management experience

·       Financial experience developing non-profit budgets


Preferred Bilingual Language(s) in either:

·       Spanish

·       Vietnamese


Requirements:

·       Must possess a valid California driver’s

license, auto insurance that covers business driving, and an automobile for

business use

·       Willingness to travel

·       Ability to work flexible hours and

occasionally work long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, to support advocacy, board, fundraising and community events
