The Center for New York City Affairs at The New School is home to the Institute for Transformative Mentoring (ITM). ITM is a dynamic training program focused on the development and support of credible messengers working in the social services fields throughout New York City. Credible messengers work with young people and in the community to reduce violence, recidivism and incarceration. ITM offers intensive college courses and professional and personal development opportunities for credible messengers. ITM also works with young people (18-24 years) and other community members impacted by the criminal justice system, including child welfare. ITM has an intergenerational focus for healing that is structured using restorative justice practices and interactive learning to support participants in engaging deeply with the material and each other.  

The Education Coordinator is expected to have prior work experience as a credible messenger, with an understanding of restorative practices. They will be skilled in teaching/facilitating, mentoring, event and curriculum planning, and coordination. This position reports to the ITM Director. The Education Coordinator is a full-time staff position which may require work to be conducted on evenings and weekends. This position is funded by and contingent upon external fundraising.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Facilitate ITM sessions that include semester-long courses and shorter term workshops and series, including: ​participate and lead up to 20 hours of classroom facilitation per week​, participate and lead customized ITM workshops as scheduled, participate and lead ITM program implementation, including recruitment, program planning, monitoring/assessment and evaluation. 
  • Provide mentorship, personal and professional support to adult students and youth program participants.
  • Develop online and in-person trainings and community events that promote restorative practices, healing and anti-oppression practices.
  • Build strong relationships with the credible messenger community and employer partners.
  • Participate in public events & meetings and serve as an ambassador for the ITM program.
  • Monitor, document and help assess student academic performance. 
  • Support the ITM alumni community with program development and event planning.
  • Evaluate alumni personal & professional development as a result of participation in ITM. 
  • Other tasks as assigned. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or GED with relevant experience. 
  • Youth mentorship experience.
  • Proven ability to work with individuals and communities impacted by, violence, mass incarceration and the prison industrial complex. 
  • Prior facilitation, training and/or teaching experience. 
  • Knowledgeable about social services and other community resources for youth.
  • Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to effectively multi-task.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders including students, community partners, university staff and faculty, and others.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, multi-task and problem solve. 
  • Self motivated with the ability to work well both independently and in team-based settings. 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. 
  • High level of computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and the Google platform.
  • Ability to supervise and support staff/students. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree. 
  • 3 years relevant work experience. 
  • Strong organizational skills with strong ability for creative problem solving skills and diligent follow up. 
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate data, help develop reports, and make recommendations based on analysis. 
  • Prior restorative justice or conflict mediation facilitation.
  • Prior experience working as a Credible Messenger.

WORK MODE

Hybrid/Split - Employees hired for this position have regularly scheduled, consistent percentage of time on campus (example: 1-4x/week) and also work some of the time remotely. 

SALARY

$65,000 - $70,000
