The mission of Oakland Promise is to engage the Oakland community to advance equity and economic mobility through cradle-to-college and career educational opportunities. Founded in 2016, Oakland Promise is a citywide movement with over 50 implementation partners working towards our common vision. Oakland Promise supports children and families from birth through college and career to ensure that postsecondary success is a reality for all Oaklanders. Oakland Promise includes four programs: Brilliant Baby, Kindergarten to College (K2C), College Access, and College Scholarships and Completion, that provide a cradle to career continuum of college and career focused support for students.  Our goal is to dramatically increase the number of college graduates from Oakland and ensure that all students hold a college-bound identity. We seek a hard working, highly detail oriented individual to join our community in undertaking this important work.

Job Purpose

Oakland Promise is seeking a passionate and skilled Communications Manager to support communications, branding, and marketing efforts. Reporting to the Director of Communications as a member of the Development & Communications team, this position will play a key role in shaping our organization's messaging and outreach strategies. Please note, this is a hybrid position requiring three days per week in-office at our Oakland location.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage OP’s communications platforms including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and X
  • Create strategy, test, and implement social media and communications campaigns that raise awareness, engagement, and loyalty
  • Support with OP’s annual Community Briefing to share the collective impact of our programming and strategic goals
  • Support the creation of OP’s Annual Report, in collaboration with the Impact & Evaluation team
  • Support the execution of donor and volunteer campaigns, including but not limited to, #GivingTuesday and marketing for volunteer recruitment 
  • Create and collaborate on storytelling with our leadership and program leaders to craft genuine and compelling stories that tell what we do for our essential stakeholders 
  • Support the Director of Communications with OP’s external media relations strategy by cultivating relationships with local, state, and national level journalists
  • Support the Director of Communications on policy and advocacy efforts (including attending briefings, convenings, and supporting thought-leadership strategies).
  • In collaboration with the Director of Communications and program teams, coordinate the website redesign process (currently in process).
  • Assist in OP newsletters, email campaigns, and other communications 
  • Assist in event planning and other external communications and marketing initiatives in collaboration with Development and other program teams 
  • Some evening and weekend hours may be required
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • 4+ years of Communications experience 
  • 2+ years of social media experience in managing all the essential channels including social media platforms (i.e. Hubspot, Agorapulse, Hootsuite, or similar platform) and a deep interest in social media trends, best practices, and ever changing industry standards
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in developing and executing communications plans
  • Ability to build relationships across the organization and with external partners
  • Commitment to supporting a diverse, inclusive, transparent, mission-oriented and equity-centered nonprofit organization

  • Experience in Canva and/or Adobe Graphic Design, video and photography production, coordination, and editing
  • Familiarity with Google Suite and Asana
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Comfortable with public speaking 
  • Some evening and weekend hours may be required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Oakland community based organizations, local government, and Oakland’s education landscape a plus
  • Knowledge of Oakland-based social media influencers
  • Interest / experience in public policy and public affairs 
  • Experience with WordPress

Compensation:

  • This is a full-time exempt position with a salary range of $80K-$90K based on skill set and experience
  • Oakland Promise offers employees fully agency funded options for medical, dental, and vision.
  • Oakland Promise offers a 401K match up to 3% plus vacation and sick-time.
  • Oakland Promise currently has a hybrid work policy with a requirement that staff are in the office 3 days a week.

Oakland Promise is a place-based organization located in Oakland, California. Oakland Promise requires that employees work in person at various engagements. Currently, Oakland Promise staff are working in a hybrid model, with some work being done remotely and some work being done in the office or at specific locations in or around Oakland. It is a requirement that all staff reside within commuting distance to the main office, located at 484 9th Street, Oakland, CA 94607. Please note that at any time, a full in-person work plan may be required, and it is of utmost importance that all staff are able to meet this requirement.
