Description

Position: Village Fellow (various positions available; see below for details)

Location: Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village, Rwamagana, Rwanda

Duration: ~11 months – September 2024–July 2025 (exact dates TBA)

Organization Overview:

The Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village (ASYV) is a residential community for orphaned and vulnerable adolescents in Rwanda and is home to 500 youth and about 130 staff.

In their four years at ASYV, students aged 14–21 gain the tools necessary to live, learn, be healthy, and build self reliance so that they will contribute to a better world.

Founded in 2007 as a response to the persistent orphan crisis in the aftermath of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, ASYV has provided more than 1,800 youth with a newfound hope for the future, including over 1,000 graduates now striving to make a positive difference in their country and abroad. Today, ASYV serves as a global model of providing hope and promise to children affected by societal-level trauma.

Village Fellows Program Overview:

The Village Fellows program of the Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village places international volunteers (“Fellows”) as staff in Rwanda. Fellows spend ~11 months living and working in the Village; they are hired to serve in specific professional roles and together with Rwandans to support existing programs. They become an integral part of the Village “family” providing a nurturing home and exemplary formal and informal education to our kids.

In addition to their professional roles, Fellows also serve as mentors to ASYV students as “cousins.” They work together with family Mamas and counselors to create a loving and supportive home environment. Fellows/cousins play an integral part in ASYV's family by serving as important role models in students’ lives.

Positions are available in the following areas. In your cover letter, indicate the position for which you are applying. Please note that positions have specific requirements based on experience, skill, and training; please see below for position descriptions. Please note that ASYV may hire more than one Fellow for roles specified with an asterisk.

  1. Career Resources Center Fellow*
  2. Communications & Visitors Fellow
  3. Visitors Fellow*

Cousin Role: In addition to their professional role, Fellows serve in the informal role of “Cousin” in the ASYV family structure. Most Fellows are assigned to mentor one or more ASYV families of 20–24 teens. Responsibilities of cousins also include:

  1. Serving as a role model to all 500 students in the Village
  2. Supporting extracurricular programming including advising ASYV clubs
  3. Tutoring students in English or other subjects
  4. Assisting on other projects and tasks, as needed
