Congregations Organized for Prophetic Engagement (COPE) is a 501(c)3 faith-based organization established in 2000 by a core group of pastors. Our mission is to “train and develop the capacity of religious and lay leaders in congregations and across the Inland Empire to protect and revitalize the communities in which they live, work, and worship. We recruit, train, and develop grassroots leaders, youth, and adults in the principles of community organizing to identify and develop systemic solutions to their conditions. As a multi-issue organization, COPE builds power through community organizing, direct advocacy, civic engagement, direct action, and leadership development. COPE’s work addresses:

  •  Educational inequity through various school reform efforts
  • Access to quality health care for vulnerable populations through policy advocacy,
  • community education, and special programs
  • Housing justice to advocate for systems that prevent housing discrimination,
  • displacement, and ensure access to affordable and secure housing.
  • Mass incarceration through various justice reform efforts to end the cycle of
  • incarceration that largely impacts poor communities of color.
  • COPE is looking to hire a Staff Accountant to assist with the accounting and finance needs of their growing work.
  • Position Overview:
  • As a member of the Finance Team and under the direction and supervision of the Chief Operating Officer and the Executive Director, the Staff Accountant will assist in managing the general accounting and financial processes of the organization. The Staff Accountant will work closely with the Executive and Finance Teams in all areas of accounting, including but not limited to, data entry in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) to ensure that the organization is maintaining strong financial and administrative operations.
  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Accurately record and reconcile accounts receivable and cash transitions in the financial management system, currently QuickBooks Online, according to established organizational procedures.
  • Manage all accounts payable and maintain all financial management systems and tools.
  •  Act as liaison between the programmatic team and management team in reconciling Emburse expense submissions.
  • Conduct and report budget vs. actuals variance and cash flow analyses and assist with cash flow projections
  • Monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting as assigned, including support for the annual audit process, and assisting with regular reporting to the Board of Directors.
  • Perform general ledger reconciliation, researching and resolving discrepancies
  • Create recurring and required month-end journal entries, including investment
  • activities, fixed assets, depreciation, expensing prepaid items, recognizing deferred
  • revenue and other accruals, monitor and release of restricted net assets.
  • Support the development of the organizational budget for each fiscal year, in
  • consultation with Finance and Executive Teams
  • Work with Executive Leadership to support fundraising efforts: reports,
  • applications, and proposals.
  • Provides audit assistance, preparing reconciliations as requested, responding to
  • inquiries from auditors as directed by COO and ED.
  • Provides Form 990 assistance, assisting in gathering information required for the
  • preparation as directed by COO and ED.
  •  Assist in ensuring that information is gathered and that 1099 Forms are filed prior
  • to the federal filing deadline.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the COO and ED.
  • Requirements:

  • Lead on special projects as needed.
  • Be available for local and statewide travel as needed.
  • Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of accounting experience, possessing and continuously maintaining
  • a basic knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), with
  • experience in nonprofit accounting highly preferred
  • Quickbooks Online expertise, working knowledge of Bill.com processing, and
  • proficient spreadsheets skill level (Microsoft Office, Google Apps)
  • Research skills along with excellent verbal/written communication skills, critical thinking skills, and ability to work in a team setting as well as be self-directed are
  • required competencies
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel and general workings of email and other
  • computer-based systems. Tech savvy candidates with experience in various digital platforms are ideal.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Compensation is based on experience and pays between $65,000 and $75,000. Benefits include health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, retirement plan, $100 per month cell phone stipend, sick and paid time off.
