My Own Book Fund
- New York
My Own Book Fund, a non-profit that supports children's literacy through book ownership, is looking for volunteers. The program brings 3rd graders from schools in disadvantaged neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs to bookstores and lets each child pick out $50 worth of books of their choosing to begin their own home library. Volunteers meet with 3rd grade classes, prep the students on how to pick a book that's right for them and accompany them on their shopping trip to the bookstore. Volunteering at one school requires a time commitment of roughly six mornings in total over a two-month period. It's a perfect fit for those who love books and kids.
