Suncokret Center for Community Development

Suncokret-Centre for Community Development in Gvozd, is a Croatian non-governmental,non-profit organization founded as a response to the psychosocial needs of community in the after war period. It aims to address negative psychological, social and cultural consequences of the social upheavals in the region, to reduce national/ethnic tensions, to improve the quality of life for all, but especially for deprived members of the society, to promote community rebuilding, reconciliation and revitalization, and support development of a sustainable and tolerant civic society. Suncokret implements programs and initiatives in this postwar area, primarily for refugees and returnees, youth and children, but also for adults. Suncokret has been grounding its work with individuals, families, groups and communities on the principles of active participation and empowerment, supporting positive initiatives, initiating co-operation, mutual respect and appreciation of differences to achieve reconciliation and revitalization within the community. Suncokret Center for Community Development, is committed to the implementation of democracy building, citizen participation and empowerment, community development, voluntarism and altruism, shared responsibility, equal opportunities and involvement for all regardless of gender, religious or national differences.

We run both a volunteer center and a community center where we work with local children and youth. At the Suncokret community center we provide after school programs for the local children in the community (from Bosnian Croat refugee and Serb returnee families) where we provide everything from educational activities, tutoring, homework help to games, sports, fun and creative workshops. We also conduct eco gardening and maintaining our organic gardens and orchards and conduct eco construction on occasion.

At the moment we are in partnership running the following:

Suncokret Center for Community Development: afterschool non formal learning activities, arts, crafts, sports, games and play for children and youth and we work with the partners below and conduct similar activities as in Suncokret.

Kids Earth Fund Croatia: arts and crafts for children and youth, eco gardening and eco/sustainability activities

In Glina we are working with persons affected by the 2020 earthquakes, creating a children's and youth program with arts, crafts, dance, and sports . Visiting elderly temporarily displaced due to the earthquakes.
