About Us

Make a difference on make-or-break issues

If you see society’s grand challenges as calls to action, Clark University’s Department of Sustainability and Social Justice (SSJ) is designed for you. As a degree candidate with us, you’ll engage in a collaborative, problem-centered approach that cuts across traditional disciplinary boundaries and gives you the breadth of knowledge and skills you need to drive impactful solutions.

You can earn your master’s degree in as few as 12 to 15 months. We offer generous scholarships of up to 30% for accepted students, and 90% of our students receive aid.

SSJ offers five master’s degree programs:

International Development: Our program brings together leading researchers, practitioners, and educators from a broad range of fields. Get practical experience developing viable solutions to drive lasting results in the field while gaining a deeper understanding of the major forces shaping societies.

Environmental Science and Policy: This innovative STEM-opt eligible program bridges the environment, technology, society, and development with a curriculum designed to give you the skills to create solutions to complex environmental challenges.

Sustainable Food Systems: STEM-opt eligible as well, this program will help you build the knowledge, skills, and experience you need to connect your career and your values. Our graduates work across the globe – in the public, nonprofit, and private sectors – to enhance sustainability and justice within food systems.

Geographic Information Systems: STEM-opt eligible as well, this program will teach you how to meet some of the world’s most urgent environmental and societal issues through the application of geospatial technologies. Study with faculty practitioners who are pioneers in GIS software development.

Community Development & Planning: Gain a thorough understanding of the complex forces that shape communities, enabling you to meet the challenges facing urban areas and contribute positively to social change.

Our degrees are points of entry into a collaborative curriculum organized around cross-cutting concentrations that allow you to cultivate a holistic approach to solving real-world problems. These focal areas include climate change impacts and adaptation, urban resilience, and human migration. Gain a professional edge from a transdisciplinary curriculum proven to develop effective thinkers and doers who are ready to make meaningful contributions to the world.
