Legal Aid Works

Legal Aid Works, formerly Rappahannock Legal Services, Inc., is the law firm for the poor. We represent low income clients in civil legal matters, such as helping domestic violence victims with family law and protective order matters; avoiding illegal evictions or foreclosures; advising clients who are being harassed by creditors; and assisting people to recover benefits to which they are entitled. With no right to a free lawyer in civil cases (that right only exists for those accused of a crime), low income litigants struggle to achieve fundamental justice in the civil court system. We exist to level the playing field. We represent clients in court, conduct community education and outreach, and help lift our clients out of poverty with enforceable orders of child and spousal support, unemployment benefits and other relief.
