Description

CASS is actively recruiting applicants from the DC community to join our Board of Directors. The Board plays a critical governance role within the organization, deciding on priorities in programming and fundraising, and keeping the organization accountable to our values.

  • We project the monthly time commitment for Board Directors is approximately 8-10 hours.
  • We are hoping to recruit new directors to grow our board and to support the staff and volunteers in their effort to create abolitionist community safety for marginalized people in DC.
  • We are specifically looking for candidates with experience and/or interest in supporting our fundraising, legal, governance, and/or organizational strategy needs.
  • We encourage candidates who may not have expertise in these areas, but have a willingness to learn.

We understand that “traditional Board experience” can ordinarily lead to a homogenous (e.g. white, cis, straight, wealthy) Board. We actively reject that framing and instead attempt to ensure equity and deeper connection of lived experience to the issues we work on. To that end, we’re looking for Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) rooted in DC; people with disabilities; LGBTQI+ people; people who are sex workers, or formerly incarcerated; and people with low or no incomes; among other marginalized and system impacted communities.

Board Director responsibilities include:

  • Providing strategic guidance on CASS’s fundraising efforts, programming, and budgetary decisions.
  • Overseeing compliance with organizational policies and bylaws.
  • Raising awareness about CASS within your networks and communities by spreading the word about our work.
  • Creating and implementing a personal fundraising plan, and giving at a personally meaningful level to support the work of the organization.
  • Attending monthly Board meetings, committee meetings, and an annual Board retreat.
  • Working collaboratively with fellow Board Directors, staff, and volunteers on one or more standing Board committees: Governance, Finance, and Programs/Advocacy.
  • Keeping staff, fellow Board Directors, and yourself accountable to the communities we serve and the values of the organization.
  • We are a working Board, meaning that we ask Board Directors to take on key work outside of traditional Board responsibilities and in between Board meetings.
