Description

GLOBAL VISIONARIES BOARD OF DIRECTORS ROLE DESCRIPTION

Our work is guided by Lila Watson’s sage words: “If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.”

Who We Are

Global Visionaries (GV) is a deliberately diverse, youth-centric organization, fostering youth leaders with a global perspective who are skilled at driving change through collaboration and inclusion. We do this by providing experiences for participants to become more empathetic, inclusive leaders and team members. We invite youth from diverse socio-economic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds to participate in GV and become more active leaders in their local and global communities.

As a youth-led organization, we seek to understand the needs and amplify the voices of our participants and community members, working in solidarity to achieve our goals together. We are committed to the work of social and environmental justice and we value equity, inclusion, and belonging. We embrace our organizational goal for youth, staff, and Board participation of 50% representation from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities. Our Board is comprised of Youth Participants enrolled in the GV program as well as Adult Board Members.

Global Visionaries Board Member Responsibilities

• Review program quality and provide insight to ensure positive, high-impact experiences.

Financial Sustainability

• Review monthly financial reports and participate in GV financial and budgetary discussions.

Community Engagement

• Share your GV experience with individuals and organizations to increase awareness and partnership in GV’s mission, which may include social media as appropriate.

• Seek perspectives from within GV and the community, incorporating into GV policies and programs.

• Actively engage and invite others to join the Board and/or Project Teams.

General Responsibilities

Recruitment Process

For Adult Directors, the recruitment process includes: a) a recommendation from an existing Board Director or Staff member; b) conversations, with an Adult Director, a Youth Director, and Executive Director; c) attend one Board of Directors Meeting; and d) receive a majority of approving votes at a following Board of Directors meeting.

Contributions & Commitments

Board Directors are asked to contribute their time, talents, and treasure in ways that are meaningful for them.

• Financial Contributions: Expectations are based on what’s meaningful to the individual Board member, but these are not the only way a Board Member can significantly contribute to GV.

• Term Length: Adult Director terms are 2 years in length, and may be renewed for up to 3 consecutive terms.

• Board Meetings: Held monthly on the 3rd Tuesday or Thursday and are 1.5 hours in length. Failure to attend 80% of scheduled meetings may result in removal from the Board.

• Project Committees: Directors are also expected to participate in one strategic project committees.

• Compensation: The Board Officer and Director roles are voluntary and not compensated positions.

• Must complete a background check and agree to confidentiality, conflict of interest, and anti-harassment policies
