Description

Become a grief peer support facilitator with the Center for Grieving Children and make an important, impactful difference for children, teens, families, and community in Maine. We are seeking inquisitive, creative, and empathic volunteers to join our community and facilitate grief peer support groups for individuals and families experiencing a loss or life-impacting illness; the Center also offers an Intercultural Peer Support Program in partnership with local schools.

Join us in the unique opportunity to help create a safe environment for individuals and families during a challenging period. Facilitators are at the heart of the Center and our most valuable resource, making meaningful connections with co-facilitators and their own experiences.

Volunteer facilitating consists of a 3.5 hour weekly commitment including 1 hour of programming with participants and additional time spent planning, processing, and in discussion with fellow facilitators and the clinical staff at the Center.

The Center for Grieving Children was founded over 36 years ago by a community member, focused on offering non-clinical, grief peer support services to individuals and families for as long as needed. All groups at the Center are offered at no-cost to participants.

How to Apply

If interested, please email Grief Services & Volunteer Coordinator Kristin Lash at volunteer@cgcmaine.org. All interested volunteers are asked to attend a one-hour information session about the Center, our peer support model, and required 30hr. Facilitator Training. Volunteer Information Session (VIS) dates as well as upcoming trainings are listed at cgcmaine.org/getinvolved.

During the 30hr. Facilitator Training, volunteers will learn about the stages of grief, how to respond to children’s loss, empathic and reflective listening skills, and how to facilitate group dynamics. Trainees will also have the opportunity to experience the peer support model and process. The hybrid Facilitator Training is held a few times throughout the year; Intercultural Facilitators receive additional training during the fall.

Reserve your spot in an upcoming Volunteer Information Session and begin the enrollment process for our next training! Email Grief Services & Volunteer Coordinator Kristin Lash at volunteer@cgcmaine.org.
