Description

Latinas On the Verge of Excellence (L.O.V.E.) Volunteer Mentor Opportunity

Did you ever wish you had a mentor who provided you with additional guidance when you were in middle school or high school? Latinas On the Verge of Excellence - The L.O.V.E. Mentoring Program is a non-profit organization that supports and empowers young women of diverse backgrounds to strive for success, both in school and in life, through mentorship and health interventions targeted at mental health, reproductive health, and college access and career readiness.

The L.O.V.E. Mentoring Program is recruiting female-identifying university students and recent alumni to serve as volunteer mentors for the 2023-2024 academic year. This is a chance for you to be the mentor you once needed, to pay forward the help you got, or to give back to the community while expanding your skill set and network.

L.O.V.E. provides mentees with a safe space to engage in socio-emotional learning and guidance from mentors and teachers who come from similar backgrounds and share similar experiences. The mentoring program is delivered from September to June during the academic year for approximately 32 weeks in New York City public schools and charter schools. We are still recruiting Mentors for the Spring 2024 semester. The commitment is only one hour, per week, for the length of the semester, at your preferred location.

Benefits:

  • Serve as a positive role model
  • Develop and practice leadership, communication, and other transferable skills
  • Take lead in supporting young women through an ongoing relationship
  • Mentor Training ToolKit that prepares you to discuss mental health and SEL topics
  • Professional development opportunities exclusive to L.O.V.E. mentors, such as networking events with corporate partners, discussion panels, and team gatherings
  • Certificate of completion and other recognitions and acknowledgements for their service
  • College credit offered for applicable courses and internship opportunities offered when available.

Qualifications:

  • 3.0 GPA
  • Female-identifying college student/recent alumni (graduation date 2023 and beyond)
  • Available to attend mentor trainings as prescribed
  • Willing to complete a background check, if needed
  • Strong communication skills and creative capacity
  • Comfortable with receiving constructive feedback
  • Willing to adhere to all program policies and procedures
  • One hour weekly commitment for the length of a semester or full academic year
  • Passionate individual looking to work with young women in a classroom setting

By creating an environment focused on role-modeling, L.O.V.E.’s goal is to provide young women access to resources that can help bring out their innate capabilities to reach their goals and lead healthy lifestyles.
