Description

Volunteers play a vital role in caring for hospice patients and their families. Hospice patients have a terminal illness with a life expectancy of six months or less. These patients have made the decision to stop curative treatments in order to focus on comfort care and quality of life. As valued members of the hospice team, volunteers can make a difference by providing a break for a family caregiver, or visiting patients in care homes and facilities.

Volunteer opportunity descriptions:

Respite Volunteer

Visit a terminally ill patient at home, giving your time so a family caregiver can take a break. Offer short-term (up to 4 hours/week) respite care, including one-on-one time with a patient. Assist them when needed or enjoy time together.

Friendly Visitor

Provide routine companionship to a terminally ill patient living in a care home or facility, once or twice a week for one-two hour visits. Read a book, watch a movie, play cards, visit or be a caring presence.

 Administrative Volunteer

Support the work of the hospice team by sending cards, making phone calls, putting together support kits, and more. This work could happen at the Kaiser Permanente building in NE Portland or at home upon request.
