Description

Green Building Workshop

Long Way Home is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization that uses sustainable design and materials to construct self-sufficient buildings that promote education, employment, and environmental stewardship.

The organization is located and works primarily in the community of San Juan Comalapa, a town of 48,597 ( 2018 census, majority of whom are Kaqchikel Maya) in the western highlands of Guatemala. We work to improve the lives of the community through environmental education and alternative construction projects that turn trash, old tires and plastic bottles into beautiful and resilient buildings. Long Way Home has constructed its flagship school, Centro Educativo Tecnico Chixot in this style. This school offers an integrated green construction and democratic education curriculum that equips students to lead their communities with innovative solutions to complex local and global challenges. We are expanding our green building projects to other villages in Comalapa and Guatemala, which helps to financially sustain the school itself.

Long Way Home’s Green Building Workshop offers a variety of hands-on learning experiences that contribute to the development of present and future generations of skilled and socially responsible green builders. Workshop graduates will emerge as ethical and creative change agents, conscious and culturally competent global citizens, and informed leaders doing their part to create a more sustainable world.

Participants will connect to their environment, and develop increased consciousness & competence relating to sustainability, environmental & ecological balance, and ethical & respectful community development. The Worskhop equips participants with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to apply their creativity to design and construction using sustainable, unconventional materials and low-impact methodologies with potential for off-grid implementation.

Scholarships and college credit available.
