    About Us

The Great Basin Society operates the Malheur Field Station (MFS) — a nonprofit environmental education and research facility located in the heart of Oregon’s high desert, on the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. MFS provides housing, dining, classroom, and lab space for school groups, researchers, birders, and lifelong learners from across the country.

Our mission is to foster environmental education, research, and conservation awareness through place-based learning in the unique landscape of the northern Great Basin.

    Position Summary

The Station Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Field Station, including staff supervision, facilities coordination, guest services, seasonal programs, and administrative oversight. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring a balance of logistical coordination, hospitality, nonprofit administration, and independent problem-solving.

    On-site residency is required.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Oversee reservations, guest communications, and on-site logistics.
    • Supervise seasonal staff, volunteers, and part-time contractors.

      • Office and communications
      • Facilities and vehicle maintenance
      • Housekeeping and dining hall services
    • Coordinate with partners to host programs and natural history events.
    • Maintain financial records, issue invoices, and monitor budgets in coordination with the Treasurer.
    • Ensure compliance with all legal and reporting obligations (e.g., IRS, BOLI).
    • Provide regular reports to the Board of Directors.
    • Foster a welcoming, educational atmosphere for all guests and partners.

    Desired Qualifications

    • Experience in small-team management, hospitality, or nonprofit operations.

    • Comfort with basic bookkeeping and common office software (e.g., Microsoft Office, QuickBooks, Google Workspace).
    • Familiarity or interest in environmental education, field stations, or rural community life.
    • Proven ability to live and work independently in a remote setting.
    • Weekend availability during peak season (May–September).
