    THE OPPORTUNITY – ABOUT THE AFTERSCHOOL ALLIANCE

    Our dynamic, mission-driven team seeks a Human Resources consultant to support our organization as we strive to ensure that all children and youth have access to quality, affordable afterschool and summer programs. Afterschool and summer programs help kids learn and grow, and give working families peace of mind when school’s out. But for every child in a program, 4 are waiting to get in.     POSITION SUMMARY

    We seek an experienced, creative, and talented HR consultant able to provide sound guidance for employee policies, provide HR support to our team, ensure we are meeting benefit regulations; and make recommendations to management. The ideal HR consultant will be able to understand our organizational culture, establish effective working relationships with management, and bring strong ideas that help our organization and team work better. The HR consultant will provide professional input once a year on core HR materials (employee handbook, particular policies, etc.) and be available on an as-needed basis throughout the year. This consultant should: have broad nonprofit HR experience; understand all the relevant policies and laws applicable to our employees; work with management to update policies and convey them to our team; and demonstrate knowledge of strong practices and trends in the nonprofit HR field to share with the Afterschool Alliance’s management team.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Employee Handbook:

    • Review once a year, bring recommendations for consideration, and make necessary changes;
    • Be available as needed to help update sections as questions or issues arise.

    Compliance:

    • Be knowledgeable of the policies, laws, and regulations that are relevant to our group of employees and should be brought to management’s attention.

    Internal Communication:

    • Consult with the Executive Director and management team on HR issues on an as-needed basis and make recommendations for management’s review.

    Difficult Conversations:

    • Have the poise and experience to provide support as needed, handle any delicate or complex personnel issues, help to handle tough conversations or guide the separation process.

    Performance Reviews:

    • Once a year, make suggestions on the performance evaluation materials and process;
    • Educate our supervisors on best practices.

    Training:

    • Provide ad hoc training on the employee handbook policies or handbook updates as needed;
    • Assist with training supervisors.

    Professional Development:

    • Provide recommendations for PD opportunities;
    • Build a list of PD opportunities in areas defined by the management team and review it twice a year with the team.

    Exit Interviews:

    • Conduct exit interviews as needed;
    • Communicate follow-up items with the HR team.

    Other (potential):

    • Review employee role structure and provide recommendations as to how to layer the roles, allowing growth of talents and experience within the organization;
    • Recommend team-building activities, etc.

    Hours: Contractual, as approved by employer, and can be based on hourly rate and/or project cost.

    Employment type: Contractual; contract is subject to negotiation.

    Qualifications: Certifications in the HR field preferred, work experience of at least 5 years, references required.

    • Attention to detail in reviewing HR documentation

    Location: The HR consultant should be in the DC Metro area and available to attend staff meetings as needed in person several times a year.
