LOUISIANA STEAM TRAIN ASSOCIATION

Founded in 1997, the Louisiana Steam Train Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, restoring, and interpreting the history of steam railroading. Through education, public engagement, and the operation of historic railroad equipment, LASTA works to ensure that the legacy of these remarkable machines is preserved for future generations.

We believe historic preservation is most meaningful when it is accessible, educational, and connected to the community. Through restoration projects, public programs, volunteer opportunities, demonstrations, and special events, we help people understand the important role railroads played in Louisiana’s economic growth, transportation history, industry, and culture.

LASTA serves residents, families, students, educators, railroad enthusiasts, veterans, skilled tradespeople, and visitors of all ages. We welcome volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds, including individuals with no previous railroad experience. Participants have opportunities to learn practical skills, work alongside experienced volunteers, and contribute to projects involving mechanical restoration, carpentry, electrical work, welding, painting, track maintenance, safety, events, and historic interpretation.

Our values include safety, stewardship, education, teamwork, accountability, and respect for the historic equipment entrusted to our care. By preserving and operating historic railroad equipment, we aim to create engaging educational experiences, strengthen community connections, encourage volunteer service and ensure that Louisiana’s railroad heritage remains visible and meaningful for future generations.
