    • Misión

    Cuchifritos Gallery is an alternative art space founded in 2001 to exhibit emerging artists and emerging ideas. Embedded in Essex Market on Manhattan's Lower East Side, Cuchifritos serves as an experimental platform for curators to present critical and timely work from underrepresented voices. Following decades of disinvestment, recent large-scale redevelopment on the LES has caused significant demographic change and economic challenges, leading to the displacement of residents and threatening the neighborhood’s cultural vitality. Cuchifritos responds to these changes with work that is attentive to the social concerns that actively inform community needs while advancing artists’ practices that preserve New York City as a place of cultural importance and exchange.

    Cuchifritos Gallery is a central program of the non-profit Artists Alliance Inc. AAI fosters the forward-thinking and experimental practices of emerging and underrepresented artists and curators with funded residencies and paid exhibition opportunities. Our artist-centered programming provides a free and accessible platform to produce, experience, and understand contemporary art in the Lower East Side, a longstanding epicenter for creative experimentation and cultural diversity. Through three initiatives-Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space, LES Studio Program, Public Works-we advocate for art-making that challenges how we experience ourselves and our communities.

    We are grateful to have inherited this work from our founding artists and are proud to be celebrating over 25 years of dedication to the practices of culture workers.
