Volunteer Role: Support Vehicle Driver (Runner Support)
About the Run
In an extraordinary feat of endurance and purpose, Dr. Larry Grogin will travel from Northern New Jersey to Southern California by completing 100 marathons in 100 consecutive days. From March 24 through July 3, 2026, he will cover 26 miles daily—running and walking to raise awareness and inspire hope for those living with Parkinson’s disease.
This historic journey depends on a dedicated support team, with volunteer drivers playing a vital role every step of the way.
Role Overview
The Volunteer Support Vehicle Driver provides on-route support for Larry by driving a designated support vehicle (Honda Odyssey minivan) during his daily 26-mile run/walk, leapfrogging along the route to provide food, hydration, gear changes, and real-time support throughout the day.
This is a meaningful, demanding, unforgettable experience — one rooted in teamwork, trust, and purpose.
Time Commitment
- Volunteers commit to 3-14 consecutive days, with the option to serve for multiple weeks or longer stretches of the route
- Two volunteer drivers will share driving duties each day, typically 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM, with some days extending longer.
- Drivers are required to be on-site and ready by 6:00 AM on their first scheduled day
This role requires stamina, flexibility, reliability, and a genuine commitment to showing up fully each day.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive a support vehicle (Honda Odyssey minivan) alongside or ahead of Larry according to the planned route
- Leapfrog ahead on the same (or nearby) route to meet Larry’s needs at any time
- Provide hydration, nutrition, and supplies as needed
- Monitor Larry’s condition and communicate with the support team
- Assist with basic logistics during the day
- Capture photos and short videos for social media and documentation (as able)
- Be present, positive, and supportive during long, high-energy days
- Respond calmly, and appropriately in case of fatigue, injury, or emergency
- Follow all traffic laws and safety guidelines at all times
Who We’re Looking For
- A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are required
- Responsible, confident drivers with a reassuring presence
- Dependable team players who honor their commitments
- Comfortable with driving at low speeds, changing conditions, and pulling over safely as needed
- Ability to remain attentive for long period of times
- Strong communication skills and calm demeanor
- Flexible, good-humored, and mission-driven
- Interested in being part of something bigger than themselves
No medical experience is required — just heart, reliability, and readiness.
