Position Title: Adult Literacy Tutor - Online Small-Group Instructor
Organization: Riverside County Library Systems Literacy Services
Volunteers needed: Seasonal (Spring, Summer, and/or Fall)
Position Description:
Make a profound impact in just a few hours a week! Help an adult in your community gain the skills they need to navigate life with confidence?
RCLS provides free, online small-group (2-8 adults) sessions that help adults build the skills they need to thrive. From reading and writing to digital literacy, citizenship preparation, health literacy, and more, you don’t just teach; you bridge the gap to a life of opportunities by facilitating access to the tools they need to build a better life.
No teaching experience required! We provide all training and continuous support. Bilingual volunteers are highly encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities:
- Meet with your assigned learners on Zoom once a week for 1.5 hour sessions for a period of three months
- Sessions are seasonal: Spring (February-April), Summer (June-August), and Fall (September-December)
- Prepare and implement sessions tailored to the class topic and the needs, goals, and interests of your learners
- Submit monthly reports on tutoring time spent, goals worked on, challenges faced, and milestones achieved by the monthly deadline
- Collaborate with RCLS literacy staff for updated goal evaluations of your learners, as requested
- Notify RCLS literacy staff regarding learner needs, challenges, concerns, questions, or situations that could affect tutoring for either you or your learners
- Attend monthly tutor support meetings, tutor development trainings, and a minimum of one event/activity per year to support the program
- Share information with the assigned learners about library services, programs, and the use of resources, and encourage them to participate in literacy opportunities
Qualifications:
- Age eighteen or older. A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Patient, flexible, dependable, compassionate, inclusive, and culturally-sensitive attitude
- Experience using Zoom or working in a virtual setting is preferred
- Comfortable using a computer, email, Zoom, Microsoft Office, and Google Suite programs
- Able to maintain a minimum three-month commitment to meeting with adult learners weekly
- Individuals of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply!
Time Commitment:
In-person interview, online Volunteer Orientation, 6 hours of Volunteer Tutor Training, and an additional Small-Group Instructor Orientation, then ongoing session planning and weekly meetings with learners for a minimum of three months. Find scheduled dates HERE.
