Partners of the Americas is seeking a dedicated and culturally responsive volunteer mentor/chaperone to accompany a cohort of high school students participating in the Guatemala Leadership & Language Exchange Program in June 2026.
This is a meaningful opportunity for an educator, youth mentor, or student-facing professional who is passionate about youth development, intercultural learning, and international education. The selected mentor will play an important role in supporting students throughout the travel experience while helping foster a safe, engaging, and reflective learning environment.
About the Program
The Guatemala Leadership & Language Exchange Program is an immersive international experience for high school students ages 15–18 from the Washington, DC metropolitan area. The program is designed to strengthen leadership, cross-cultural understanding, Spanish language practice, and global citizenship through educational visits, cultural exchange, and community engagement in Guatemala.
Role Summary
The mentor/chaperone will accompany students during the program in Guatemala and serve as a supportive adult presence throughout the experience. This person will help reinforce expectations, promote student well-being, and contribute to a positive group dynamic before and during travel.
Key Responsibilities
- Accompany students throughout the program in Guatemala from June 10–18, 2026
- Support student safety, well-being, and engagement throughout the experience
- Help maintain a positive, respectful, and inclusive group environment
- Reinforce program expectations, schedules, and group norms
- Communicate with program staff as needed regarding student support or concerns
- Participate in pre-departure preparation meetings and orientation activities
- Serve as a reliable and encouraging adult presence for students throughout the exchange
Ideal Candidate
We are seeking someone who:
- Has experience working with high school-aged youth
- Demonstrates strong judgment, maturity, and professionalism
- Is enthusiastic about international education, cultural exchange, and youth leadership
- Can support students in a calm, flexible, and responsible manner
- Is comfortable traveling internationally as part of a group
- Spanish language ability is required
Preferred Background
Strong candidates may include:
- Educators
- School counselors or administrators
- Youth program staff
- Advisors, mentors, or other professionals with experience supporting teens
Time Commitment
- Participation in several virtual pre-departure meetings in spring 2026
- Full availability for international travel from June 10–18, 2026
Cost Coverage
For the selected mentor/chaperone, program-related travel, lodging, and meals will be covered.
