    Position Summary:

    CLC’s Strategic Litigation team is responsible for a broad portfolio of litigation matters. The team litigates and provides policy advice on matters that fall within CLC’s mission but do not fit neatly within our Voting Rights, Redistricting, or Campaign Finance groups. For example, this includes defending and promoting election reforms such as ranked choice voting (RCV), and meeting new challenges to democracy, such as litigation regarding DOGE and executive orders. The Strategic Litigation team is also responsible for working with our Redistricting, Voting Rights, and Campaign Finance teams on matters that arise from those groups.

    Responsibilities of Legal Counsel on the team include assessing litigation opportunities and mapping CLC’s litigation strategy, preparing pleadings, motions, and briefs, conducting discovery, and engaging in all other aspects of trial and appellate proceedings. They also include advising on state and local legislation on subjects within the purview of the Strategic Litigation team, including drafting testimony and testifying as appropriate.

    Legal Counsel are eligible to take part in CLC’s hybrid work policy.

    Responsibilities:

    • Conduct legal research, analysis, and writing
    • Establish relationships with and advise state and national partners
    • Represent CLC in coalitions, at public events, and in the media
    • Litigation responsibilities:
      • Identify strategic litigation opportunities in coordination with internal and external stakeholders
      • Manage a caseload, from pleading stage through discovery, trial, and appellate proceedings
      • Prepare pleadings, motions, and briefs in federal and state cases, and strategize and manage discovery process
      • Take and defend witness depositions, lead conferences with co-counsel, cooperating counsel, and/or opposing counsel, and take part in court hearings
    • Other duties as assigned
    • Some travel required

    Qualifications and Skills:

    • Legal experience required: at least one year (a judicial clerkship satisfies this requirement)
    • Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills
    • Demonstrated strategic judgment
    • Proven ability to build and maintain good working relationships with a diverse range of partners
    • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain legal issues to non- legal audiences
    • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a team
    • Commitment to CLC’s mission
    • Active membership in good standing in the bar of the applicant’s home state, or eligibility to waive into the DC bar
    • Election law experience is a plus but not required
