About Us

With 150,000 members, Garden State Equality is New Jersey's largest civil rights organization. Since Garden State Equality's founding in 2004, New Jersey has enacted 216 LGBT civil rights laws at the state, county and local levels - a national record.

GSE’s most prominent achievements are: winning marriage equality for same sex couples in New Jersey; employment, housing and public accommodations protections for the transgender community; one of the strongest anti-bullying laws in the country; and a cutting edge law banning harmful “conversion therapy” targeting children and teens in the LGBT community.

Our work has been prominently featured in the major motion picture "Freeheld" (2015) and the Academy-Award winning documentary of the same name (2007), upon which the film is based.
