MSCR Mendota Elementary Safe Haven PLUS After School Program

Madison, WI | www.mscr.org

About Us

Mendota Elementary's Safe Haven PLUS program is an academic after school program for K-5 students every day of the week. The program consists of both math and reading tutoring as well as homework help. This after school childcare and academic enrichment is provided at a very low cost to parents and students in the Madison Metropolitan School District, through Madison School and Community Recreation (MSCR), a department within the school district.

Mendota's school poulation is diverse and includes many students from minority ethnic backgrounds with varied socio-economic statuses. Many of the students involved in our after school program qualify for free/reduced school lunch and all of the students who participate in Safe Haven PLUS are performing below proficiency level in reading and/or math.

Our fall program runs from October 5, 2009 - December 11, 2009 and will resume again during the spring semester. Program hours are:

Mondays - 1:00pm-5:30pm

Tuesdays-Fridays - 2:30pm-5:30pm

Math tutoring is from 3:00-4:00pm Tuesday and Thursdays, while literacy tutoring takes place on Wednesdays and Fridays at the same time. Homework help is from 4:00-5:00pm Tuesdays-Fridays. Mondays are "free play" days and include a field trip once each semester.

Volunteers are required to complete an MSCR application and criminal history disclosure statement, available online at: http://www.mscr.org/Volunteer-Application.cfm

Interested volunteers should contact Rachel Deterding, volunteer coordinator via phone (608-204-7864) or email (rdeterding@madison.k12.wi.us) for more information.
