About Us

The Ecology Center (EC) promotes environmentally and socially responsible practices through programs that educate, demonstrate, and provide direct services. The EC operates one of the oldest on-going recycling programs in the country; maintains a regional resource center and store; operates the Berkeley Farmers' Markets (primarily organic); publishes the quarterly environmental, Terrain magazine; and sponsors the Bay Area Coalition for Headwaters Forest, the Berkeley Community Gardening Collaborative, and the Food Security Project of West & South Berkeley. Our programs share a common purpose of educating the public about environmental problems and injustices, empowering individuals and groups to work for change, and modeling sustainable alternatives to systems which threaten ecosystems and their human and other inhabitants.
