Description

The Mayan League is seeking a Grants Research Intern to join our growing team! The Grants Research Intern’s primary responsibility will be to support the Development Associate in grants prospecting and research. The Grants Research Intern can have a flexible schedule and this can be a remote position. If the ideal candidate is located in Piscataway Nation Territory (Washington, DC metro region), you will have access to our co-working space at Eaton House. 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

Reporting to the Development Associate, the Grants Research Intern will play a key role in prospecting and research for funding to support the International Mayan League and its programs. In order to obtain funding for the critical work we do to support Maya peoples, the Grants Research Intern will:

  • Utilize GrantStation, mailing lists, and search engines to find funding opportunities from foundations, corporations, donors, etc. that align with the mission of The International Mayan League and its programs.
  • Conduct thorough research by reviewing Requests for Proposals (RFPs), Calls for Proposals (CFPs), and documents from open funding opportunities noting funding source, deadlines, grant parameters, application requirements, and other information pertinent to the proposal.
  • Summarize key points and findings from research to input it into the grants research templates provided.
  • Update the FY24 Grants Prospecting Calendar with ongoing research progress, relevant deadlines, and grant proposal requirements.

We do not accept federal funding.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities) 

  • Previous experience in communication, research, grants management, grant writing, and/or non-profit setting preferred.
  • Experience in strong research skills and the ability to gather relevant information efficiently.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Suite, and Zoom.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. 
  • Multilingual, minimum Spanish and English, fluency in a Maya or other Indigenous  language is a plus but not required. 
  • Experience working with Native American and Indigenous Peoples and communities is highly desirable. 

Expected Outcomes:

By the end of the fellowship, the grants research fellow will have:

  • Successfully completed prospecting of at least three to five major grants.
  • Enhanced grant research templates for future grants prospecting research.
  • Contributed to setting up the organization for a successful grant cycle application.

Tech Requirements:

It is preferred that candidates have their own laptop for remote work, but not required.

The Grants Research Internship provides an opportunity to learn from Indigenous leadership, increase knowledge in human rights, expand professional networks, and obtain hands-on experience in grants research, communication, collaboration, and project management. As an intern, you will be afforded opportunities to participate in capacity building initiatives with other development professionals. By learning with leaders in the philanthropic space you can expand your network while supporting the Maya and other Indigenous communities with the Mayan League team. Internships are available on both full- and part-time basis. Students may arrange to obtain academic credit for their work and can receive recommendation letters upon successfully completing the internship. We are able to offer remote office contributions for internet service. Start date immediately.
