Access to Justice Projects Counsel - Attorney

Position Summary:

The Louisiana State Bar Association’s (LSBA) Access to Justice (ATJ) Department seeks an individual to fill the full-time position of Access to Justice Projects Counsel.  The LSBA Access to Justice Department is a nationally recognized program housed at the Louisiana Bar Center in New Orleans and focused on improving access to justice for all Louisianans.  The Access to Justice Program plays a unique role in providing information, facilitating connections, and offering resources/tools for the public, the courts, and advocates to support civil legal aid programs with the shared mission of ensuring access to justice for low-income families and underrepresented communities.

The ATJ Program staff members do not provide direct representation to clients but work collaboratively as a small team with Louisiana Justice Community stakeholders and LSBA Committees.  Each team member is responsible for various projects and is encouraged to think creatively how best to achieve the established goals.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

The ATJ Projects Counsel will manage, administer, and direct various projects of, or facilitated by, the ATJ Program which strengthen relationships and foster coordination among Louisiana civil justice community members and criminal justice system partners. Projects may originate from various committees and subcommittees for which ATJ attorneys serve as staff liaisons, including but not limited to the Access to Justice Commission and the Access to Justice Committee. The ATJ Projects Counsel will work with Louisiana civil legal aid providers, courts, legal aid organizations, pro bono organizations, local bar associations and other interested partners to build support for Louisiana’s civil legal aid community. Primary responsibilities include: 1) staffing the LSBA Legal Services for Persons with Disabilities Committee, 2) staffing the   Children’s Law Committee 3) assisting with statewide disaster coordination and legal response 4) supporting the department

through technology and communications with the public, non-legal providers community, judiciary, private bar, and other Justice Community stakeholders. Within these primary job responsibilities, duties may include:

·         Developing initial projects or programs and coordinating work and committees/project teams

·         Monitoring project deliverables and timelines to ensure timely successful completion of work

·   Providing virtual and on-site support in facilitating committee efforts, synthesizing key takeaways from discussions

·        Identifying information sources, gathering and interpreting data, designing surveys, analyzing

and presenting findings to project team members

·      Preparing summaries, creating reports, presentations, training events and other deliverables

·        Communicating and offering feedback on legal resources designed for the public and developing clear, easy to read and use legal information resources

Qualifications:

Candidates must have demonstrated public interest experience.  The ideal candidate would be a graduate of an accredited law school, have experience facilitating group meetings or programs, and be adept with current technologies and social media. Two to three years of responsible professional experience in relevant fields including public interest law, program or project management and facilitation, social or human services, and well developed technologic and communications skills are considered assets. Diverse economic, social, or cultural experiences and competence in a language in addition to English are a plus.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.  A benefits package is also provided for full-time employees.
