Description

The Director of Finance oversees the presentation of financial statements and manages the organization budget. The position is responsible for department level budgeting including fund accounting across various foundation, federal, and local funding sources. The position manages a team to oversee all general ledger, AR, and AP and direct the team to complete monthly duties on schedule. The position reports to the Vice President of Finance.

You are an experienced and hands on leader who is enthusiastic about maintaining and improving strong processes. You have strong knowledge in budgeting and budget modeling, cost accounting, and grants/contracts compliance. You have management experience in team oversight, audits, cashflow and financial modeling, presentation of financial statements. You are enthusiastic, detail-oriented, and a strong team player.

What You Will Do

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Team Management (20%)
  • Manage a 2-4 person staff in directing AR & AP activities. 
  • Lead team meetings, team deadlines, and support in annual goal setting across functions.
  • Support middle management to effectively direct analyst responsibilities.
  • Assist team in development and standardization of training materials.
  • Accounting (35%)
  • Oversee month-end close process including bank reconciliations, payroll reconciliations, cost accounting, and reimbursement billing to government sources.
  • Maximize direct cost allocations for review by existing leadership through familiarity with contracts and grants.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting procedures through observation, supervision, and testing. Monitor annual changes in FASB and ensure up to date knowledge of revenue recognition standards. Ensure adherence to GAAP. 
  • Oversee payroll and fringe benefits processes to provide optimal labor costing to various funding sources.
  • Budgeting (35%)
  • Facilitate compliance with federal financial management guidelines. Provide guidance to programmatic leadership to adhere to the code of federal regulations (2CFR200) and other provisions as directed by IJ federal contracts or cooperative agreements. 
  • Collaborate with department leads on a quarterly basis to update current forecasts and support the multi-year budgeting process.
  • Support middle management with analyst completion of monthly budget to actuals.
  • Compile fiscal estimates and prepares fiscal reports as requested, including high-level analysis of organization activity and trends.
  • Reconciliations & Year-end duties (5%)
  • Manage year-end single audit and negotiated indirect cost rate agreements.
  • Drive in year-end close activities.
  • Systems Development & Management (5%)
  • Lead systems efforts including project management for NetSuite and HRIS system (Rippling) customization.
  • Propose improvements or process changes to management.

 Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Economics; MBA/CPA preferred.
  • 7+ years of progressive experience; nonprofit finance and accounting experience is required.
  • Experience with OMB, financial statements, A-133 and 2 CFR 200 Audits, and a proven track record in grants management.
  • Implementation of internal controls, policies and procedures and best practices.
  • Technical proficiencies: Microsoft Suite; expert level Excel, Net Suite, CRM, PEO, or cloud-based systems; manage.
  • Vendor/consultant partnerships.
  • Proven track record in system implementation, serving as project leader for departmental initiatives.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written with the ability to share financial best practices at all levels. 
  • A multi-tasker with the ability to wear many hats in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to manage effectively within a remote environment and prioritize “big picture” thinking.
  • Possess good judgment and high level of emotional intelligence.
  • Passion for working with formerly incarcerated people and others affected by harmful legal systems.

The position will be paid $130,000- $150,000 annually. Salary offers are based on the candidate's experience and qualifications and our practice of maintaining salary equity within the organization. This is a full-time, salaried position. 

This is a full-time, salaried position based in one of our three offices (Oakland, Los Angeles, or Washington DC) working under a hybrid schedule (currently 2 days a week in office). We ARE NOT considering remote staff for this position.
